Return to Sego Lily Intro Page
Dear Sisters -
I thought it best to repost these to the list since I have had so many
requests. There are four different ways to do the advent tree...instructions
are at the end of the first one. The others are variations.
If you have any questions, let me know!

Advent trees are a fun way for children to visualize scriptural accounts
and learn gospel principles. I came up with this idea as a way to
help our children focus on the Savior during the Christmas season.
We use a small (2-3ft) artificial Christmas tree which can be purchased
inexpensively anywhere Christmas trees are sold. The scripture references
above are written or typed on slips of paper and placed in a small box
or drawstring sack along with the visual aid. The boxes (I bought
them through Current), or whatever you use, should be numbered 1-24.
Scripture #1 should go into box #1, scripture #2 in box #2, etc.
Each day, beginning December 1, the appropriate box or sack is opened and
the scripture and symbol can be discussed. As the children get older,
the scripture references and discussion can be expanded. The Christmas
advent focuses only on the events surrounding the birth of Jesus .
It is appropriate for very small children. The Service Advent consists
of suggestions of simple service projects that family members can do for
each other during the Christmas season.

Service Advent Tree
Each day before Christmas, family members are encouraged to perform
small acts of service to other family members or someone outside their
family. Suggestions can be placed in the bags, tiny gift boxes or small
stockings on the Advent Tree, or individuals can make up their own
and put on the tree.
Some of the suggestions might include:
1. Bake cookies and take them to your home teachers.
2. Read a story to a younger brother or sister.
3. Shovel a neighbor's walk.
4. Help set the table for dinner.
5. Make breakfast for a family member.
6. Help fold the laundry.
7. Pick up your toys without being asked.
8. Hug someone in your family.
9. Help a younger brother or sister get ready for bed.
10. Help mom make dinner.
11. Play a game with your sister or brother.
12. Make a treat for the birds.
13. Draw a picture for your grandparents.
14. Polish dad's shoes.
15. Write down your testimony and give it to your parents.
16. Make someone's bed.
17. Write a letter to grandparents.
18. Pull your brother or sister on the sled.
19. Help clear the table.
20. Write a note to a sister or brother telling them what you like
about them.
