Breadmaking Class

Jo,

We just did a breadmaking class and couldn't use the kitchen because there was a class in there on strawberry jam!

Here is how I did it:

My recipe makes three loaves of bread.  So I brought enough ingredients so that each sister could go home with a loaf.  I broke the sisters up into groups of three and then each made a batch of bread.

They all took turns following the recipe; measuring, adding and mixing.  Then they all took turns kneading so they couuld get the feel for it.  After the kneading was done they broke the dough up into three portions and put it into greased plastic ziploc bags (gallon size).  Their bread did it's first rise right in the bag while they ate refreshments, visited and drove home. They got to take their one loaf home and bake it there!  I sent them home with a copy of what to do once they got it home (place in a greased pan, let rise, bake, etc) and then another copy of the acutally recipe.

It was a huge hit!!!  Every sister went home and baked bread that night and had homemade bread for breakfast.

White Bread

1 cup warm milk
1/2 cup instant potato flakes
2 packages yeast
1/2 cup warm water
2 Tablespoons sugar
1/2 cup oil
1/3 cup sugar
1 tablespoon salt
1 beaten egg
3 cups warm water
10 cups white flour

Mix together warm milk and potato flakes, set aside.
In a large bowl mix yeast, 1/2 cup warm water and 2 Tablespoons sugar.
Set aside for 5 minutes.
To yeast mixture add oil, 1/3 cup sugar, salt, egg, and 3 cups warm water.
Mix well.
Add milk and potato mixture.
Mix well.
Add flour.
Knead well on a floured surface for 10 minutes.....

**AT THIS POINT HAVE THE SISTERS DIVIDE DOUGH INTO THREE PORTIONS AND PLACE IN GREASED ZIPLOC BAGS TO TAKE HOME. SEND WITH A COPY OF INSTRUCTIONS ON WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU GET HOME. (See stars at bottom of recipe.) AND COMPLETE RECIPE.

....Put in a greased large bowl and let rise until double.  Punch down and divide into three loaves.  Place in greased loaf pans and let rise until uniform in size (about even with the edge of the pan).  Bake at 450 degrees for 10 minutes then turn back to 350 degrees and bake for 30 more minutes.

**WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU GET HOME Place your dough in a greased loaf pan and let rise until even with the edge of the pan. Place in a 450 degree oven for 10 minutes, then turn oven back to 350 degrees and bake for 30 more minutes.

Hope this helps, Michelle  Bangor, Maine
