The Relief Society handbook states"Homemaking meetings should include the following:

4.  Luncheons or light dinners.  These are an authorized and budgeted part of the homemaking meetings.  This meal gives sisters an opportunity to serve, to build sisterhood, and to fellowship the less active."

Most of the wards in our stake have a luncheon about 2 or three times a year.  The other months we have a tasters table.

The tasters table constists of foods that give sisters a "taste" rather than a whole serving of something.  We usually have a theme around which the tasters table is prepared. Sometimes the Tasters Table committee selects the theme, sometimes the homemaking director does.

This month the tasters table will be done around the theme of pasta.  We are having a demonstration on pasta which we will use the food from the demonstration as part of the tasters table.

There usually ends up being "tastes"of at least 4 or 5 different foods or more, which seems to give the sisters plenty to eat.  If they would like they can always have second servings as there is usually plenty of food to go around.  These have been very popular and the sisters seems to really enjoy them.

We still fulfill the goals of giving the sisters an oportunity to serve, to build sisterhood and to fellowship the less active it just isn't as big a production nor as much work as a luncheon or dinner is.  This has helped in several ways.  It has helped on the budget and it also shortens the time of the meeting which helps those sisters that can't stay for longer than an hour or so.

Some of the themes we have had for past tasters table have been things to do with pumpkin; summer salads; soups; breads; jello (this turned out to be very interesting.  Didn't know you could do so much with jello!)  low fat foods; low calorie foods.  I think you get the idea.  One year we did diiferent countries each month.  We would have someone tell about the country and then the tasters table food would be food from that country, that was really fun and the sisters enjoyed it.
