In regards to the First-aid kits out of placemats - We just made some out of potholders. We had a Stake Sharing Fair - one of the classes was a first aid class - people signed up ahead of time for purchase and put the 1st aid kit together. Cost was $6.00. We bought some potholders and then made about 30 more out of quilted material.
The potholder must have the loop in the middle of one of the sides - not in the corner. We sewed 10 snack-size baggies - overlapping the ends 1st one on one side then one on another - (bottoms towards center) layering them (we did 5 at a time, layering them then sewing them on the machine and then the other 5 the same way. Then you fold over the potholder, sew a button on the opposite side as the loop and button it.
They were filled in the separate pockets with:
matches,
a small piece of sandpaper & birthday candle,
single edged razor blade .
Q tips - cotton balls .
alcohol swabs,
antiseptic swab .
2 needles,
thread,
button,
safety pins,
tiny scissors (10 cents each) .
bandaids and gauze pad ..
rubber gloves (2) ..
pencil,
paper ..
Red Cross CPR card ..
quart size-zip lock bag,
small bar of soap ..
burn gel ..
Ibutab advanced pain relief (2)
aspirin (2),
extra strength un-aspirin (2)
2 pepto-bismo tablets ..
3 in 1 antibiotic ointment ..
Hydrocortisone cream ..
2 paper thermometers (thermodot) ..
salt,
candy
Other things that could be added:
bandage scissors,
tweezers,
adhesive tape,
meat tenderizer (bee stings),
This is just a small one for the glove compartment or 72-hour kit.
