Stumpers handed the lady inside the box their identification papers. An onslaught of questions followed:
"Where do you live?" ... "Where are you going?" ... "Who are you visiting?" ... "How do you know her?" ... "Do you have any fruits or vegetables with you?" ... "Are you carrying any firearms or other weapons?" ... "Do you have more than 10,000 dollars Canadian in your possession?"
To this, Stumpers said, "No," and tried very hard not to smirk as she heard Nightems say under her breath, "Yeah, I got 20 American." BAD NIGHTEMS.
Then the woman in the box said, "Do you have any tobacco products?" |

Nightems said, "Yes."
The woman in the box said, "How much?"
To which Nightems replied, "Two packs."
The woman asked, "Between the two of you?"
At this point, Stumpers' brain froze, and she apparently did not know how to answer the question. She blurted out, "Yes."
In her head, Nightems thought, "Well, great, I can't contradict her now. I'm an accessory to LYING!" Because as Nightems and Stumpers both knew, Stumpers had an entire carton in her backpack, which was sitting in the back seat of the car.
No one will ever know, including Stumpers, why she didn't just say, "Yes, I have a carton." They have speculated that she feared a carton was too much, and that the Canadians would take away her cigarettes. But since Stumpers' brain had ceased functioning, it remains a mystery to this very day.
The woman in the box handed back their IDs, along with a yellow piece of paper, and said, "Go park under that awning and go inside the building and show them that paper." Intrepid at the fact that not EVERYONE was parking under the awning and going inside, they followed the Canadian's orders and made their way inside the building. |

As they walked inside the building, Nightems muttered under her breath, "Remember not to laugh."
They stood in line for less than a minute, and then the woman behind the counter looked at their IDs and the yellow slip of paper and said, "You need to go to the end of this room and talk to the man in the grey uniform." She handed them back their IDs and the yellow paper, and Nightems and Stumpers walked to the end of the room and stood in line.
Both of them were, admittedly, nervous. It has been speculated that Nightems and Stumpers each went to their Happy Place while standing in the "Immigration" line wondering at their fate. The truth is, they were both quite content while thinking on their favorite things... until, of course, the man in the grey uniform brought them back to reality. |
