I am starting with my great grandfather Thomas Perry. I know that he was born in Bilston, Staffordshire, the 1901 Census states his age as 38 which means he was born around 1862-63. Thomas married a Martha McNiff on the 8th of August 1899. The marriage certificate states that the wedding took place at St. Hilda's Church in Leeds, it appears that he has a middle name of Evans and that his fathers name was David Evans. This is the only occurrence where his name has the middle name of Evans, have a look for yourself here. I have tried without success so far to find a reference to his birth. We now refer to the 1901 Census which was taken on the 31st of March 1901. Thomas and Martha were living at 18, Shaw Street, Leeds. Their family consisted of a son called Arthur McNiff, aged 4, born in Leeds and a daughter named Martha Ann Perry, aged 1 also born in Leeds. Thomas was now employed as a Coal Miner Hewer. By 1908 the family was now living at 51, Springclose Street, Leeds where another son, Thomas (my Grandfather), was born on the 6th of December 1908. In 1912 they also had another son called Ernest, sadly, the same year, their father Thomas Perry died on the 13th of November at the Leeds Union Infirmary aged 51 years which now suggests he was born about 1861. Martha re-married in 1914 to a Samuel Westerman but, in 1924, she too, sadly, passed away. Ernest married Florence C Brewitt in 1939, they had no children and Ernest died in York in 1971 aged 59.
Martha's parents were Peter McNiff and Rachel (nee Bulmer). Peter was born in Ireland about 1843 and Rachel Bulmer was born in Stanley in 1844. They married on the 4th of February 1867 at
St. Austin's Chapel in Wakefield with Peter's name entered as McKniff.
The information  in the
1881 Census contains the following information about Martha McNiff. She was living at New Street, Wakefield, Yorkshire aged 8, with her father Peter McNiff, her mother Rachel and her two sisters Ellen and Mary. Peter McNiff was employed as a Cart Driver. All 3 daughters were born in Wakefield, Ellen in 1870, Martha in 1873 and Mary in 1875. In 1895 Mary McNiff married Edward Conway and in 1901 they were living at 43 Ark Street in Leeds.
In the 1891 Census the McNiff's were still living in New Street, Wakefield where a Peter McNiff aged 6 had appeared, his relation to the head of the house was grandson, I believe
Peter died in the first World War in 1916 and is buried in Burmantofts Cemetery. It appears he was injured on the battlefield, evacuated to St. James hospital in Leeds where he later died. Both Peter and Rachel McNiff died within 6 month's of each other in 1897.
Uncle Michael's wedding, 1968.
Martha Perry with two of her son's, Ernest and Thomas abt.1916.
So, what we know is that my grandfather was born in 1908, where we go now is to who he married.......Irene Dobson.
David Hodgson married Elizabeth Harrison in Naburn, Yorkshire on the 14th of February 1805. In the same year a son was born and was named
Henry Hodgson. On the 24th of November 1829 Henry married Elizabeth Waites also in Naburn. In 1838 they had a son and named him Henry after his father. We now continue with the son Henry who, on the 21st of October 1861 married Frances Gresham at York Register Office.

Henry was a Joiner by trade and in 1881 had 3 sons and 3 daughters and was still living in Naburn with his wife Frances. By 1891 the family had moved to
Selby, Frances was now a widow (Henry died in 1888) and her first daughter Elizabeth had married Gallsworthy Shaw on the 10th of April 1889 in Selby. On the 17th of October 1890 Gallsworthy and Elizabeth Shaw nee Hodgson had a daughter called Emily Annie Shaw who was born at 8, Addinall's Yard, Selby. Other Children of the Hodgson family from Naburn in 1881 were, Richard, Edward, Harry, Annie and Frances, all were born in Naburn.
Gallsworthy's family in 1881 consisted of his parents Henry and Jane Shaw, 3 brothers Charles, Tom and Frank and a daughter Elizabeth. Henry Shaw was a butcher by trade and the family lived at 25 Ousegate, Selby.
One puzzle yet to be solved is that Gallsworthy Shaw seems to have either divorced or left Elizabeth between 1891 and 1901 because in the 1901 Census he is living with another family in Middlesbrough who all have his surname of Shaw and is working as a Painter (Arts).
