Welcome to Japan! There are a great many varieties of performing arts in
Japanese culture. Traditional art
forms continue to maintain an important role in Japanese culture and everyday
life. Genres include music, both
instrumental and vocal, theatre, dance, folk art and acrobatics. Each of the genres serves a unique purpose
and contributes to a segment of Japanese life. Some art forms are highly stylized and refined, others
originate as part of religious rituals; others serve as forms of
entertainment, which act as mirrors for popular culture. The traditional performing art forms of Japan rarely occur as separate from each other. Dance, music and narrative forms are most often intertwined to produce an art form. Although it is possible to examine the genres, or components of an art form, individually, it is important to realize that it is part of a larger whole that was intended to be viewed such. |
