Sputnik, 12/18/28-11/3/06 |
It is with deep sorrow that I write this article about my friend of over 40 years Sputnik Monroe. He would have been 78 on his next birthday. He had been down for the three count more than once during the past 10 years. Even during his most recent hospital stay, he continued to amaze doctors with his fighting ability and the want to live as long as he wanted. Friday morning November 3, 2006, at around 8 a.m., he was called to that big ring in the sky to join many that he had battled in the ring. I am happy that I was able to go and see Sputnik this past year at his estate in Florida. Danny Miller, my uncle Basil and I joined him in a day to remember. Please join me in a silent 10 count for the man that changed wrestling in the Deep South. He did this during a time when doing the things that he did were unheard of. He packed in more fans with feuds between Billy Wicks, Don Fargo and many others all over the South. In the Great Lakes area, Sputnik had a feud with Luis Martinez that got him in more riots than Bull Curry. He also met Tex McKenzie in some memorable matches that ended in riots. Arrangements for Sputnik are not fully in place at this writing , but he will be cremated as per his request, and his ashes will be taken to a memorial at National Cemetery in Alexandria, Louisiana on November 18 at 2 p.m. If you would care to send a sympathy card the address is
Sputnik Monroe Enterprises
RIP Rock.
