Ocala 2003 Part Two

When I left you last … I had gone to Florida to visit with my Uncle Basil and see a few friends that live there. I also made it a point to let Dory Funk Jr. and his wife Marti know that I would be showing up at their arena for the Saturday night taping of !BANG! TV, which is the branded name of their wrestling program they do for central Florida.

Friday went very well for my uncle and me as we worked on his computer for about six hours. Then, on Saturday morning, we went garage sale hunting. You never know what you can run into out there.

Returning to his estate, we began to work some more on his computer, adding some good programs that he will use to better his usage of his new computer.

That evening, we went to the Dory Funk Arena in Ocala to watch and enjoy the fine talents that Dory and Marti are developing. We were treated to an outstanding array of matches, including a truck driver brawl that used the spacer bars used to handle and secure cargo in the trailers.

I was fortunate enough to meet Adam Windsor. He is a three-belt winner and holder of the Funking Conservatory Championship as well as the Florida Heavyweight and one other belt that means just as much as the others.

My main focus was on a seven-foot youngster by the name of Magnum the Giant. The two were to meet later that evening in the main event in one of the most closely called matches I have seen in quite a while. I made sure that Adam Windsor was aware of my presence at ringside.

Following a presentation by Dory and Adam Windsor of a Lifetime Achievement Award to me ... I retired to the rear of the arena again and took the young Magnum to the side for a few minutes to give him some advice on his upcoming match. As I ended the short conversation with him, I asked that our talk be kept between us.

As the bell rang for the main event, Marti began to announce some of the upcoming matches for the next card the following week. Then, she gave a short introduction to Magnum, who went up the ring steps to a chorus of catcalls and snide remarks.

It seems that some of Adam Windsor's fans have started to chant … "Fe-fi-fo-fum ... I smell a giant getting beat." It didn't amaze me that the fans of Ocala, Florida would attack this brilliant young star … I did feel saddened that Magnum took it in such good stride.

All of a sudden, the room went completely black, and strobe lights started flashing. Marti Funk gave about a two-minute introduction to the Funking Conservatory Champion as he entered the arena to a standing ovation. I watched as this great talent walked around and through the fans, extending his hands to shake everyone's hand and hugging all the gals he could get to.

I sat and just started a slow burn as I saw everything going on with this young warrior from England. It was then that the referee "The Claw" signaled for the bell to start the match. Hold upon hold, counter after counter, reversal after reversal was used by Adam Windsor to try and take this huge seven-foot giant to the mat.

At one point, I rose from my special seat and approached the ring and offered a little advice to Magnum. He leaned over the second rope and listened with enthusiasm to my suggestion and nodded his head in approval. The fans were not happy with my interjection into the match and began to boo me and throw their signs at me in protest.

I never could figure out why people were so intense with helping out goody two shoes like Windsor. After beating Windsor to a crumpled mess on the mat, the Giant turned to me and smiled. If only I had this kid 30 years ago ... the money I could have made with him.

As luck would have it, the fans started chanting Adam's name and gave him the adrenalin to get out of a very punishing hold, and it was then that he began to pound the giant with closed fists, much to the chagrin of yours truly. I began to call out things that would give the giant some kind of advantage over this mat wrestler from England.

Suddenly, out of nowhere, the giant grabbed Windsor by the throat and choke slammed him three times. The Claw decided to throw her two cents in and disqualified the giant for his actions. It was clear to me that she was a Windsor fan like the rest of the audience. Magnum looked at me, and I gave him the high sign to do the choke slam on her and take her out for what she had done to him.

It was then that Marcus "The Reason" Dillon came to the ring, and both he and Magnum began beating the living beegeebers out of Adam Windsor. Dory Funk and Sledgehammer hit the ring to try and even things out. The pair of Magnum and Dillon came to my side of the ring and began to challenge the trio to a match.

It was then that Sledgehammer called out to me "Hey how about you??" I ripped off my jacket and started towards the ring, only to be stopped by Magnum, who stepped in front of me. He showed me that he had real respect for me and my ring knowledge. I was quick to raise his hand and show the fans of Ocala who the better man was. We left the arena in a chorus of boos and catcalls so bad that I can't print them in this column.

I assured Magnum that I would be instrumental in getting him more wrestling knowledge and some holds that have not been used for over 30 years to help him beat this kid from England that has been so lucky as of late. It would be very interesting to see how Adam would match up against a "Stomach Claw" or how far the Giant could stretch his neck in a "Hangman Hold" that was barred in 16 Western states.

I can assure you fans of Ocala that this will not be the last that you have seen of me. I will be back, and if I can do anything to help the Giant, Magnum, beat Adam and become the Champion … I WILL.

A little word of advice to Dory Funk Jr. ... RETIRE while you have the chance. Find something else to do…

Adam Windsor, come out from behind the promoter's apron and put the belt on the line against Magnum before he has to shame you into it.

Better yet … just GIVE him the belt, and he will call it even…
