west oakland's violent and brooding disposition was mystifying. its soul was dark, powerful, and enigmatic. west oakland was all at once frightening and intoxicating. the poverty and projects were oppressing, but a seething sense of community thrived, refusing to be crushed. i only wish i had taken more photographs...
