| Dear Psyched Advisor , Please help me. I really need advice on what I should do. I'm currently studying in Vermont High School in in Year 12. I have been taking my courses this year of which are mostly challenging ones. One of my weakest subject happens to be French. I always have difficulty in that class trying to understand and to make it through the year with my teacher. My French teacher have been picking on me ever school started. He has been trying to ask me difficult questions that he knows I have problems answering. Even worse, sometimes I can't even answer the question at all. Why does he do this to me? He keeps on picking on me everytime I look confused. This causes me to be very frightened and lose most of my confidence. After a while, I don't even want to put a foot into that class. Everytime he calss on me, even just to tell me that my pencil dropped on the floor, I feel petrified. I would just turn pale with just the slightest sound of his call. Is there anyway or anything I can do to make the situation better? Should I talk to him about why he has to do this to me or should I just drop the class? Frightened Kidster |
| Dear Frightened Kidster, Your teacher might not intend to make you feel bad about yourself or that he wants to decrease you self-esteem or confidence. His reasons may only be just to make you study harder or to help prepare you for the difficult course with having you trying to answer his questions. He might notice you having trouble. That is why he wants to test you, to see your improvements. I also believe that the teacher's intentions were not to make you feel bad but to make students aim for improvements. To make changes in the students. My advise is to don't drop the class but instead, try to study harder to make things better. But what I think is best for you is to ask him questions when you don't understand. Tell him you don't instead of giving him the impression that you are just lazy. Or even better, stay after class and ask him about the topics you don't understand if you don't feel comfortable asking in class. Show him that you are making an effort and that you are trying hard.
