WELCOME TO THE OKINAWA AUTO INSURANCE INFORMATION LINK
1999

No one can anticipate the unexpected.  Insurance is an area we must always consider.  I am not pitching any one company over another, but on Okinawa your choices are limited and you must have insurance.  The choices are AIU and CIGNA.  With that, the following information can be used as a guide when it comes to acquiring auto, property or general housing liability insurance.  Be forewarned that these quotes are based on the YEN rate.  The quotes are current as of the date this link was updated and may change without notice.  However, I will do my best to keep it as accurate as possible.  Since rates for other than auto insurance are based on your circumstances only auto insurance are listed.

It is "highly" recommended that you contact one of the below numbers if you wish a more precise quote or have specific questions not addressed within this link.

For AIU and CIGNA, quotes can be used as a guide to obtain insurance once you arrive on Okinawa:

VERY IMPORTANT:  IF YOU HAVE NOT HAD AN ACCIDENT OR CLAIM IN THE UNITED STATES FOR THE PAST 3 YEARS, BRING A CERTIFICATE OF NO-CLAIM WITH YOU FROM YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY.  IT MUST BE THE ORIGINAL CERTIFICATE.   THE CERTIFICATE PERMITS YOU TO RECEIVE AN ADDITIONAL 10% DISCOUNT THE FIRST YEAR.  YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY SHOULD PROVIDE THIS FREE OF CHARGE.

To transfer a vehicle into your name and use the insurance company will cost approximately $45.00 (American).
A driver on Okinawa must be at least 18 years old to drive off base.
A teenager can get their license to drive on base "only", at the age of 16.  However, the 16 year old driver must not drive in town until they are 18 years old.
You will need insurance prior to registrating a vehicle with PMO.  (Joint Vehicle Registration Office (JVRO) and the Land Transportation Office (LTO)).
To de-register a vehicle, the insurance company may charge you a fee; approximately $35.00 (American), or MCCS resale lot on Camp Lester may charge you to dispose of your vehicle.
To obtain an on base decal, all paperwork must be completed prior to receiving the decal.
A temporary registration will be provided by the insurance company to obtain your decal.  You can expect about 10 days for your actually paperwork to return for pickup from the insurance agent.
There are "NO" multi-car discounts... insurance at the rate of "EACH" will be applied for all vehicles.
Insurance rates are based on the sponsors age, rank,  type of vehicle and your driving record on Okinawa, not the dependents for all vehicles insured.  However, a youthful driver under 18 will have a dramatic affect on your premium.
On Okinawa, there are "NO" grace periods for insurance.  If your insurance lapses, it's gone!
You can purchase insurance for a 3 month minimum, however, it it steeply prorated and will cost you almost as much as insurance for a full year.
All rates associated with this link are by the "YEAR" only.
I have been on Okinawa for 3+ years, and since I have had no accidents or claims, this year I will receive a 25% discount on insurance.
If you do not have a valid U.S. drivers license prior to coming to Okinawa, it will be difficult to obtain a SOFA status license.
Purchasing a vehicle identified as a "sports car" on Okinawa will cost you 50% more to insure then a standard vehicle.  Some examples of a sports car would be the MR2, RX7, Roadstar and Fairlady Z.
You can purchase a vehicle here only if you possess a SOFA license.  That means one vehicle per SOFA license.  Except for exemption allowed for special-use vehicles, you may not purchase more vehicles than SOFA licenses you hold in the family.
