Messerschmitt Me 155

Alongside the
Messerschmitt Me 109T carrier-borne fighter and the
Junkers Ju 87C attack aircraft, the Messerschmitt Me 155 was to be
a high performance single-seat fighter with devastating firepower
against enemy aircraft as well as "soft" naval targets. It was
supposed to reach speeds up to 650km/h, and be armed with three 20mm
and two 13mm cannons. In May 1942, the Messerschmitt firm was to design a new carrier-based fighter based on drafts of the Me 109ST (ST for Spezialtr�gerflugzeug, Special Carrier Aircraft). This new fighter was named Me 155A and should correct all the weaknesses of the Me 109T. In principle it would be a new aircraft with greater wingspan, better air buoyancy and wider landing gear, in addition to other carrier aircraft requirements like landing hook, catapult mounts, folding wings and naval emergency equipment. In order to produce the new fighter rapidly, Me 155 would use as many existing parts as possible from the numerous and successful Messerschmitt Bf 109 fighter. The project was later transfered to Blohm & Voss and there a prototype was completed as the Bv 155. The whole program was canceled in 1943, as work on the existing carriers KMS Graf Zeppelin and KMS Seydlitz was stopped indefinitely. |
