On August 18, 1955, the 355th Fighter Group (Air Defense) was reactivated at McGhee-Tyson Airport TN as part of the Air Defense Command. Equiped with the North American F-86D Sabrejet, the 354th, 357th and 469th Fighter Interceptor Squadrons provided air defense for the eastern region of the US and in particular the Oakridge Nuclear facilities, the Alcoa Aluminum plant and the Tennessee Valley Authority dam system.
Beginning in October of 1957, the 355th started the deactivation process with the last of its aircarft reassigned to other units by the end of November 1957. Formal deactivation was completed on January 8, 1958.
Prior to deactivation, the 355th won its first Air Force Outstanding Unit award.
