AN EULOGY TO THE                 SYDNEY  CRICKET GROUND

There is talk of moving test cricket away from the Sydney Cricket Ground to Telstra Stadium at Homebush, firstly the one day series and then the test matches.
What a terrible thing to do just for the sake of money, because Telstra Stadium can seat over 80,000, it is easier to get to and the catering service is better the big boys can see all of the $$$$$ signs in the cash till but they do not have any idea what the cricket loving fans want.
In a recent poll taken in Sydney the majority are prepared to put up with traffic jams, chaotic parking and long queues at the beer and food bars for the sake of TRADITION.
Money cannot buy tradition, this is built up over decades of playing the game and the recognition around the world that this IS the test venue in Sydney.
I walked around the visitors dressing room at the S.C.G. and it is old fashioned with wooden bench seats around the wall, plain lockers and a dismal paint job but the feeling of going into that room and thinking of all the great players who have sat on those benches is awe inspiring.
The stadium at Homebush is named after the sponsor who pays for the naming rights but just think if some of our other big companies take over the sponsorship.Imagine the commentator saying "This test is coming from Big Kev's Stadium" or even "Dodo Stadium" the mind boggles.
Lets hope sanity prevails and the S.C.G. remains the test venue for N.S.W. but unfortunately money talks so do not hold your breath.
