Pale Rider

This drawing is a portrait of none other than Clint Eastwood as the preacher in the 1985 movie Pale Rider. This drawing is also the subject of my second instructional DVD on how to draw portraits.

I'm a fan of westerns and especially Clint Eastwood westerns. It seems like just about every weekend you can flip through the channels and you will almost certainly find a rerun of A Fistful of Dollars, Two Mules Were Sisters Sarah, Hang 'em High, or The Good the Bad and the Ugly.

I chose this picture to do an instructional video on a portrait drawing techniques for a number of reasons. My first DVD was a drawing of Marilyn Monroe. So, for my second DVD I wanted to draw a male character. In addition to that, this drawing has a hat and facial hair and some other challenges that were not covered in my first instructional video.

For anyone who has ever wanted to learn to draw portraits there has probably been a little bit of fear or intimidation because portrait drawing is perceived to be more difficult than drawing other subjects and in fact it can be. But there are various tricks and techniques to help keep everything in proportion. And of course keeping everything in proportion is crucial when it comes to portrait drawing. When drawing a portrait, if you are off the slightest little bit the drawing won't look right. Even if you can't quite put your finger on exactly what the problem is you will still know that something is wrong. But with the proper techniques (and some practice time) you can learn to draw portraits that are a near perfect likeness every time.

You can see more of my pencil drawings on my website http://www.adamvalentine.com . I have drawings of animals, portraits, celebrity portraits, and even a little fantasy art (which I hope to do more of soon). I also have instructional DVDs available for anyone interested in learning how to draw portraits or how to draw animals.
