Boromir- Dúnedain lord of Gondor. Boromir was born in 2978 Third Age, and is the eldest son of Denethor II (Steward of Gondor) and Finduilas of Dol Amroth. He is clearly the favorite son over his younger brother, Faramir. A strange dream, one he shared with his brother, led Boromir to the Council of Elrond in Rivendell in 3018. He hoped to learn the dream's meaning, which seemed to foretell the finding of Isildur's Bane: the One Ring of the Dark lord, Sauron. Although Boromir wishes to take the ring to Gondor and use it to defend his homeland, the Council decides that the ring must be destroyed. Boromir is appointed to be one of the 9 companions who will attempt to take the ring into Mordor and destroy it. “In a dream I saw the eastern sky grow dark, but in the west, a pale light lingered. A voice was crying: 'Your doom is at hand: Isildur's Bane is found!” With Aragorn, Boromir helps to save the Fellowship on the mountain of Caradhras. In Lothlorien, Boromir is tested by Galadriel, but does not share with his companions all that passed between them. Once the Fellowship reaches Amon Hen, Boromir finally succumbs to the evil lure of the Ring and tries to wrest it from Frodo. Frodo manages to flee, and Boromir's madness quickly passes ... and he is filled with understanding and remorse. Yet chaos overtakes the rest of the Fellowship at this point, who all split up trying to find where Frodo and Boromir have gone. Boromir comes upon the hobbits Merry and Pippin, who are being attacked by Orcs. In his brave defense of his friends, Boromir sounds the great horn of Gondor to call for aid, but he is quickly wounded mortally with many orc arrows. The orcs capture the two hobbits and flee.
'Aragorn knelt beside him. Boromir opened his eyes and
strove to speak. At last slow words came. Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli (who have managed to stay together) give their fallen comrade a formal ship-burial by sending Boromir's body over the Rauros Falls in the Elvish boat given them by Celeborn. ******* NOTE: If the legend of Mithrellas is true, then both Faramir and Boromir have a bit of elvish blood. Their mother was Finduilas of Amroth (sister of Imrahil) who was the daughter of Adrahil, Prince of Dol Amroth. The princes of Dol Amroth were descended from Galador, who the first prince of Dol Amroth. According to legend, Galador's parents were Imrazor of Numenor and the elven Mithrellas - and she was a silvan elf who had once been companion to Nimrodel. According to the legend, Mithrellas was a companion of Nimrodel. She became lost in the woodlands of Belfalas and was taken in by Imrazor of Numenor. This all seems to fit the story of Nimrodel. Tolkien does say this is a traditional legend, and never says it's actually true, but it seems likely to be true because Legolas immediately sensed there was elvish blood in Imrahil.
Sean Bean plays Boromir in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings.
