Fred Harvey
1944-19
Fred Harvey was already well known for his places of hospitality along the Sante Fe Railroad.  In the late 1940s, he became the concession at the Painted Desert Inn.
His head architect and interior designer, Elizabeth Colter, drew on the architecture of the Painted Desert Inn for inspiration.  She also hired Fred Kabotie, the well-known Hopi artist, to paint wonderful murals in the lunch and dining rooms.

Throughout the West since the late 1800s, Fred Harvey brought a bit of culture to the Wilds in the form of young ladies.  The Harvey Girls were known for their neatness, politeness, and good service.
