A Close Call
1958 to the prese
In 1958, the Inn closed again.  The structure had become compromised. Large cracks laced the walls.  Water damage threatened the Kabotie murals.

In the mid-1970s, it was decided that the Inn would be razed. Because of local, grassroot outcry, however, the Inn was saved.

In 1987, the Inn became a National Historic Landmark.  It was an irreplaceable part of Petrified Forest National Park, a reminder of the rich historical resources of the area.
