Both Navajo and Apache migrated into this region at least by the 15th Century. Some scholars believe that they have been here since A.D. 900. It is a Navajo phrase that became the popular term for the Ancestral Pueblo People: "anasazi". This appears to mean "Enemy ancestors" or "someone else's ancestors". The Hopi have used the term "head bashers" historically for the Navajo, hinting at a not so friendly past. Within the Petrified Forest National Park, at least one historic hogan has been discovered, but there weren't any Navajo or Apache living in this area when the park was created in 1906. They live close by, however. |
