In October 1994, a top member of the Cuban national boxing team took advantage of a one-night stopover to defect to the United States. Diobelys Hurtado Pimentel, 22, said he managed to slip out of the team's Miami hotel early Monday without confronting his coaches or the team's security escort.

He turned pro in December 1994 and was undefeated in his first 20 fights.

In January 1997 Hurtado had challenged Pernell Whitaker for the WBC welterweight title. He dropped Whitaker in the 1st and 6th rounds, and was ahead on all three judges score cards when Whitaker ended the fight with a crushing eleven punch combination in the 11th round.

The Cuban would get another crack at a title in November 1998 when he stepped in as a last second sub to fight Kostya Tzsyu for the WBC super-lightweight interim title. Again Hurtado was on the verge of upsetting one of boxing's best when he dropped Tzsyu twice in the 1st round. Tzsyu’s body attack eventually slowed down and stopped Hurtado in the 5th round of that fight.

In May 2002, Hurtado catchs the WBA junior welterweight title stopping Randall Bailey in the 7th round. But in his first defence, in October 2002, he was knocked out by Vivian Harris in the 2nd round.

Prior to the title fight, when the boxers were selecting their gloves, an ugly altercation resulted in a brawl between both camps. Following a number of insults, Hurtado expectorated in the challenger's face and in the ensuing mayhem the champion's cornerman Don Kahn threw a chair at the Harris' followers.

All the bad drama did not endear Hurtado to Harris, who made a point of going after the Cuban expatriate from the opening bell.

"I was waiting for this moment for a long time. I had this dream since I was a kid, man, winning a world title, ya know," a jubilant Harris said after the TKO victory. "Hurtado can only fight one way. I was cutting off the ring. I messed up his whole head."
