| SECTION ONE--"C" level--65 points MAXIMUM. Must earn 60 points in this section to move to section TWO. Note: all notes taken for credit must be in Cornell format; CLICK FOR INSTRUCTIONS.. 1. Take a look at the tsunami website: http://www.tsunami.org. Take notes. 3. (15 pts.) Write an autobiography--read the story about the 10-year old girl who saved 100 people in Phuket, Thailand. (10 pts.) How are earthquakes and tsunamis related? Visit this website and take notes-- http://temp.water.usgs.gov/tsunami 5. (15 pts.) Take a look at the Discovery Channel's page on tsunami. Review each section (Interactive Map, Slide Show, Video, How to Help, On TV, Watch the Preview and Latest News) and take notes on each section. 6. (15 pts.) Make a poster--draw and describe how a tsunami starts and ends. Include a bibliography. 7. (20 pts.) Watch any documentary-type TV show on tsunamis. List the title, network and date of broadcast. Take notes, then summarize the program--1 to 3 paragraphs. 8. (15 pts.) Write a piece of poetry describing either conflict or change that results from a tsunami. Get written feedback from Dawn. Revise as needed. 9. (20 pts.) Write and illustrate a 6 to 10 page book about tsunamis for children. Get written feedback from Steve, Dawn & Susan. Revise as needed. Read the book to a child ______________. 10. (30 pts.) Write a 10 sentence paragraph describing the action and dangers of a tsunami. Your paragraph can be in any language OTHER than English. Read it to a family member and 2 other classmates who speak the other language. Get written feedback from each of them; revise as needed. 11. (15 pts.) Using adding machine paper, make a timeline showing what happened during the December 2004 earthquake in the Indian Ocean. Include a scale. 12. (10 pts.) Pick ONE of these TSUNAMI LINKS...review and write a paragraph about it. |

| SECTION THREE--"A" Level. Choose ONE for up to 20 points. Include bibliography information. 1. Pick one of the countries that's been affected by the tsunami. Imagine you are the disaster relief director. Write an outline of your disaster relief plan. Include facts & figures. Get verbal feedback from Ginny Karen and revise your plan as needed. 2. Pick and research 5 organizations that are providing relief aid to countries affected by the tsunami. Make a chart--include 1) name of the organization, 2) contact information--location, phone, email, website, etc, 3) relief provided, 4) safeguards for donors that the money donated is going where promised. Get verbal feedback from Karen and Ginny and revise your plan as needed. |
