The
Peabody's Summer Basketball League was started in 1992 by Neil Fesette and
Tom Lacey. After five years of traveling across the lake to play in
the Burlington Summer Basketball League, Fesette and Lacey decided it would
be a great idea to organize a summer basketball league in Plattsburgh.
It took a lot of time and effort to get the league off the ground. The
first thing Fesette and Lacey had to decide was if there was enough interest
during the summer months to hold a league. Sure enough the league had
six strong teams in the first year. Finding a facility to play in was
another chore. After much debate it was decided the league would be
played in an indoor facility. The site was Stafford Middle School.
In order for college players to participate the league has to be sanctioned
by the NCAA. The lengthy application was submitted and officially
approved as a sanctioned basketball league by the NCAA. In the 11
years of the league's existence the league has always been a sanctioned NCAA
league. One ideas Fesette and Lacey came up with is for each team to have separate colored and numbered uniforms. This worked out great. Fesette and Lacey then came up with a specific set of by-laws geared for sportsmanship. It was decided that any player who received two technical fouls for the entire season would be removed from the league for the remainder of the year. With such a strict rule in place players would have to adjust with better sportsmanship and discipline. This also worked out very well. The league did have some growing pains. A backboard was shattered, bottles were left in the locker room and a spectator brought her large dog to a game just as the school principal was giving parents a tour of the gymnasium. After six years at Stafford Middle School, Fesette and Lacey decided to move the league to the spacious Old Base Gymnasium and it has been held there ever since. The league utilizes board certified referees and dedicated scorekeepers. The one thing Fesette and Lacey are most proud of concerning the league is the fact that in 11 years of the league's existence there has never been a forfeit. Fesette and Lacey also enjoy the camaraderie of the players in the league who regularly attend the post game festivities at Peabody's, the league sponsor. Peabody's has a long history in sponsoring town and city events. Peabody's outstanding reputation is an ideal match for the league. The tavern's owner, Bob Wallett, has always been a sports oriented person. Without his help the league would not exist. The league has now expanded to 12 teams. Fesette and Lacey hope to expand even more. But for now the long trips across the lake to Burlington are a thing of the past. |
