The accepted definition of Air Combat Manoeuvring (ACM) is that phase of warfare in which the fighter operates within visual range of enemy aircraft, employing large scale three dimensional manoeuvres to bring its weapons to bear whilst denying the enemy a weapon firing opportunity.

The best Naval Aviators all have one thing in common, they fight to fly, fly to fight. fight, to win. A Naval Pilot is above all else aggressive.

Everything I had ever learned about air fighting taught me that the man who is aggressive, who pushes a fight, is the pilot who is successful in combat and who has the best opportunity for surviving battle and coming home. -- Major Robert S. Johnson, USAAF

To be an effective pilot you have to understand a few things about aircraft in general.
