What is Linux?
(Pronounced lee-nucks)
Linux is an open-source operating system based on Unix. Linux was originally created by Linus Torvalds with the assistance of developers from around the globe. It is a freely-distributable implementation of UNIX that runs on a number of hardware platforms, including Intel and Motorola microprocessors. It runs on many platforms, including PCs, Macintoshes and Amigas, Linux has become extremely popular over the last couple years.
Let us install the right Linux distribution for your particular hardware. We will partition your drive, install the Operating System and setup your Internet Connectivity and Email.
You get a great Operating System that includes open source software which rivals many of the programs you have to pay for if you were using Windows!
About the Linux Desktops
Linux is an amazing Operating System that features a plethora of customizable elements, even more so than Windows! Every facet of a Linux Desktop can be customized to your preference. Click here to see more desktop screenshots.
Although there are many Desktop Environments that you can choose from, for your Linux install, the two most popular are the Gnome Desktop and K Desktop (aka: KDE). Both will be installed on your machine, when you login to Linux, you will be prompted on which Desktop Environment you would like to use.
Which Desktop Environment should I choose?
That really depends on which one you become the most comfortable using. That's why we install both versions for you to try out. Each Desktop Environment features programs that are intrinsic to itself, however, you could use the same program when running Gnome or KDE. So don't worry if you get attached to a particular program, you can still use it in either of these desktop platforms!
If you are looking for an easy transition from the world of Windows®™, then we suggest using the K Desktop Environment. As you can see from the screenshots page, it is very much like the desktop you are already used to in Windows. You can also make KDE look and behave exactly like Windows. But the real fun is tweaking the settings and seeing the difference it makes to your Desktop Experience!
Gnome is an excellent choice! For the Windows®™ fans out there, why not try something totally new, and yet at the same time, familiar. Resembling more of the classic Mac operating system rather than a Windows desktop, Gnome is extremely easy to use and understand. Although not as customizable (for someone new to Linux) at first glance as KDE, this Desktop Environment features a clean looking GUI (Graphical User Interface) and sharp looking icons.
Whichever platform becomes your favorite, your documents are available to you at all times. our documents, no matter what type of media they are, will always be located in the same place, your Home folder (The Linux version of your Documents folder.)
