FILEZ AND GAMES

Filez 5.21 (pictured above) is an easy to use file manager for the Palm OS. Use it to remove, beam, or modify any file on your handheld. It's useful for removing old programs/databases and for telling some files to back themselves up. It supports memory cards (if your Palm has that feature, mine doesn't). Filez is also handy for checking up on the amount of free memory you have left, and the condition of your battery. Download the latest version at NoSleep.Net.

GAMES

I didn't get a Palm so I could play games, but everyone needs a few games for those boring moments in General Assembly when there is nothing else to do. There are hundreds of free games available, and here are a few that I like.

Patience version 2.6.2 is a great set of 21 kinds of solitaire card games. This version supports color, high-resolution, and has improved graphics. It works fine on gray-scale, too. New games include: Forty Thieves, Miss Milligan, Picture Gallery, Royal Cotillion, Stalactites, and Tarantula. The opening screen asks you to choose which kind of solitaire you want to play, and provides rules for each. I usually play Klondike, which is plain solitaire. You can download Patience 2.6.2 here.

Pocket Chess 1.0. by Scott Ludwig. I've been playing chess since Junior High School, and it is satisfying to be able to play it on my Palm. There are eight levels of play. On the first level your opponent moves almost immediately after you move. On the eighth level, you must wait several minutes for each move of your opponent. There is a little "clock" that tells how much time is left for your opponent to make a move. Pocket Chess has been purchased by Handmark. If you really like Pocket Chess, get the latest version 2.51 (with lots of bells and whistles) for $19.95 at Handmark.

Checkers v2.0. Before I learned chess, I played checkers, and was once pretty good at it (college champ). This is version was released on June 12, 2003 by David Crofts of Berwick Victoria Australia.. You can set it for your opponent to look 4, 6 or 8 moves ahead. It plays at a strong level, and I like it a lot. It works with either gray-scale or a color screen. You can download Checkers here.

Gobble! 2.0. I couldn't find a screen shot of Gobble, but this picture is close. When my children were growing up we bought an Atari game set that came with Pong and Ms PacMan. Gobble is a PacMan variation, and it is free. You can eat power pills and ghosts, just like in the original PacMan. Gobble! is a freeware gift from Mobile Generation Software. You can download Gobble! here.

Petra-Luna v. 2.5 from GDProm.Com. Did you ever play Tetris on a Game-Boy or Atari? Tetris was one of the early popular electronic games, and is still a good way to pass the time. Petra-Luna is a freeware clone of Tetris, and works in either color or gray-scale. You can download Petra Luna here.
