Metropolitan Police Ghost Squad

Introduction

London, 2024, and the Metropolitan Police Department's Ghost Squad [MPGS] has been around more or less since the Samhain Tearing of October the 31st 2004, when the Pale Lands of the dead got so overcrowded that it all spilled over into the living lands and all hell broke loose. Within a matter of days Parliament had passed several acts, one of which allowed the Met to form a specialist unit to deal with all the cases of hauntings caused by the dead existing along side the living. Some ghosts had serious antisocial tendencies, and the new laws enacted made it a criminal offence to scare a living citizen to death. Such Big Bad Bastards, as they became known, were later to be locked away in the Outer Darkness of the Pale Lands in specially made prisons developed by Mishima Shinto Psychic Wards Company of Osaka, Japan. They also developed Spook Cages to entrap angry ghosts and facilitate their arrest and Ghost Vision Goggles so that living officers could still see ghosts in broad daylight.

Another extended citizenship rights to those ghosts, or spooks as they became known, that they had previously enjoyed in life. They could hold down jobs, get married [although such couplings invariably remained childless], vote at elections, and pay taxes. Marriage law was change so that the Until Death Do Us Part bit was optional, with the safety valve of annulment in place just in case a spouse could not cope with sharing space with a dead partner. It had been observed that burying a dead spouse only to find him back at home after the funeral could be a bit of a shock to deal with...

Cleaning companies the world over developed new materials to deal with the mess that ghosts left behind. Ectoplasm proved to be a real bitch to get out of upholstery and off walls, and this led to a boom in the industry.

Things began to settle down around 2014, but still some ghosts still didn't want to play by the [new] rules of their existence, and further offences were added to the statute books, including that of committing robbery or fraud by ghostly means. Spooks for the first time were recruited into the MPGS and similar such LEOs the world over to work along side their still living counterparts.

We now join the members of the MPGS as they tell you their hair raising stories...
