The artists in this category all had their musical beginnings in country music. Rockabilly, a brash and lively mix of country (hillbilly) and rhythm & blues that became rock 'n' roll, emerged from Sam Phillips' Sun Studios in Memphis in the mid-Fifties. It produced the first genuine rock 'n' roll artists, breaking into the pop charts with Elvis Presley. While some rockabilly artists enjoyed occasional hits, most true rockabillies never reached the charts.
