Title: The Nottingham Thing

Chapter 3: Bowled Over

Wednesday 4th October 2000

The Guest House

I woke up the next morning with a terrible hangover. The others ate their cooked breakfasts, but I couldn't face it and stayed in bed. The others decide to drive around the Midlands to find a cheap reconditioned part for Chris' car. I stayed in bed. Eventually I got up and went for a walk around the local area. I found a local shop where I bought some food and drink which made me feel better. I went back to the guest house for a lie down which made me feel worse again.

Chris called me on my mobile. He'd left his wallet behind. I dug it out, and he came back and picked it up. He and Kevin went off to buy the part they'd found and dropped Dave and I off at Nottingham City Centre. The first shop we visited was Argos, where Dave bought a new watch. I wonder if that was anything to do with Chris' comments in the pub on Monday?

Dave and I continued to look around the shopping centre - Dave nearly got run over crossing the road. Twice. I bought some film for my camera. Dave bought some rolls for lunch and a signing lobster, which he called Laurence. We met back up with Chris and Kevin and drove off to the cinema/bowling complex. Dave kept the nature of his purchase secret from the other two. We decide to watch Hollow Man, an invisible man type thing. Kevin decides to sit in the row in front of us, for no apparent reason. Following that we had a couple of games of ten pin bowling. I did particularly badly due to my bad head. I couldn't find a soft drink anywhere - the vending machines were empty and nobody would serve me at the deserted Wimpy burger bar.

Bowling

Following that we got a print out of Dave and Kevin's high scores and went to the New York Italian style restaurant over the road. The print out got thrown across the room at one point, and we never picked it back up. Dave and I shared a jug of lager and an insulting match. The food was good, and Dave ordered a desert described as 'for two to share'. The waitress tried to disuade him, but he was having none of it. The desert came back and it huge. Dave had trouble eating it.

The Guest House

Dave unveils Laurence the Lobster (in fact a Rocky the Singing Lobster toy) to a shocked Chris and Kevin. After it sings a couple of numbers, we're all rolling around laughing.

When we were changed and ready for our last night in Nottingham, we spent several minutes ringing round for a new taxi firm. Fortunately we found one and got a different taxi driver.

Nottingham City Centre

We returned to Lloyds No. 1, where we played drinking games. Then we went back to Revolution. The same barmaid was there and she did a very amusing impression of Dave drinking Chilli vodka. We asked here which was the best club to visit. She pointed us in the direction of one. Chris drank a few too many flavoured vodkas and ended up quite drunk. A tall man dressed in green stood next to him at the bar and started dancing - badly. Chris dubbed him the dancing tree and starting mimicking his movements. Time was called at the bar and we stayed in Revolution as long as we could. Chris grabbed Kevin's mobile and dialled 'Sophie'. Unfortunately it was a different Sophie...

Outside the bar, we met some older ladies, one of whom introduced herself as Dirty Gerty. We made polite conversation and left for the club. On the way, we asked a couple for directions. They appeared to be quite worse for wear, and Dave told the man that he was the original Tinky Winky, sacked from the Teletubbies. The man was convinced, so Dave expanded his story, claiming to be Bungle from Rainbow. He used his impression of Bungle to back up the story. The guy became sceptical, but left convinced that Dave had once been a large purple creature who ate custard and toast a lot.

When we arrived at the club, we discovered it was a laid back affair, with local musicians jamming on stage. We continued to drink, especially Chris, who was quite wasted by now. We stayed a couple of hours, which we spent mostly staring at a very attractive girl. Unfortunately, two guys were already trying their luck with her.
