Trip to Germany July 2001

Preparing to depart from Bingen by Rhine River cruise boat, going downriver (North) to Koblenz. We made two stops enroute, one at Bacharach.

View of the old town of Bacharach from near the river. The town is surrounded by vinyards and is a popular tourist stop, especially for Americans.

Our room in a pension in Bacharach. It was right on the main street with the splendid view you see at the right. Grapevines festooned buildings and patios.

Departing from the Koblenz hauptbahnhof (main train station). Behind is the train schedule. We learned how to select our destination number, put cash into the machine, and purchase our tickets.

After we returned from our Rhine River area touring, we picked up the rental car and visited Bad Kreuznach where we lived from 1965-67 while in the Army. We lived right up there on the second floor.

Rose Barracks, home of 8th Infantry Division and 8th Signal Battalion during Paul's tour 35 years prior, most recently home of the 1st Armored Division. Base closed August 31, 2001.

Peeking through the gate. Building on the left was 8th Signal Battalion Headquarters when Paul worked there from 1966-67.

Base Chapel

Nearly deserted post exchange.

Many of the old landmarks were as we remembered. The Faust Haus restaurant, however, appeared to be out of business.

The timeless Bridge Houses, a symbol of Bad Kreuznach.

The open air farmer's market still operates two days a week in Bad Kreuznach. The other days it is a parkplatz.

We found the back paths on Kuhberg Hill leading to the overlook above Bad Münster.

A distinctive half-timbered building near the Cathedral Plaza in Ulm.

The German "smart car" holds two people and some suitcases, drives along well at city or autobahn speeds, and fits into the smallest possible parking space. If I did my arithmetic correctly, regular gasoline costs about $3.40/gal in Germany.

This is the view from from our pension (guest house) in Oberammergau in southern Germany (Bavaria).

Here is Frau Müller tending her lovely flowers in front of her pension.

We ascended the beginnings of the Alps from Oberammergau by taking a cablecar up to an altitude of 5500 feet.

Here we found hiking trails, incredible views, pure air, and wild flowers. We could hear the faint sounds of cowbells from fields below.

Many brave souls enjoyed the alpine scenery from parasails, hang gliders, and glider planes.

It seemed so peaceful just gliding off the mountain to sail over the fields and forests, looking for an updraft to keep going.

Colorful street musicians in Rothenburg. We think they were Turkish.

One of the gates with steps up the inside of the wall which surrounded the old town of Rothenburg.

The main square in Rothenburg where we listened to the Ambassadors of Music high school group from Utah, USA.

This is Linderhof, one of King Ludwig's Bavarian castles. We explored the outside of this one, and took the tours of Hoenschwangau and Neuschwanstein castles.
