| Paul and Caseys Great Adventure - Part 4 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| We bid farewell to San Francisco and went to Bakersfield, where Casey met various family members of mine and we idly larked about for a day or two. The overall plan was that everyone lark about for a day or two, then we all go happily as a group to Las Vegas and then various points in Arizona and New Mexico. Now, if you've ever met the Griffiths family and various in-laws and hangers on, you'll quickly realize that we never go anywhere 'happily as a group', but the expedition started well enough. We visited Death Valley, and there was this town nearby that had the worlds largest thermometer there.. something like 50' high. The temperature when we got there was 116 degrees, or something like that. We parked at a Wendy's to eat and it was hard to even walk across the parking lot. It would be tough to do pretty much anything in that heat.. there was no humidity or anything, but the heat just beat you down. The trip to Vegas in general took us through the hottest, most inhospitable areas of the continent, and only a few days earlier we were in a near blizzard! |

| Me 'taking my supper' in Bakersfield. I don't drink, so the red glow you see on me is sunburn. My sister Judy is also getting in on my photo op. Lexus is at the bottom of the pic looking at her Uncle Paul in bewilderment and disgust. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Casey with her arms folded like she's pissed off at me. And Jermaine in the background looking like he doesn't care. And a dog's ass. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| We were running a little late when we got to Las Vegas, and the plan called for us to leave early the next morning and continue on our way. We spent a lot of the evening milling around with my sister and her boyfriend trying to figure out where the hell everyone was and fixing problems with our room. I didn't really want Casey's only impression of Vegas to be walking around the strip aimlessly like a heroin addict, so we split off from the group to spend more time in Vegas and maybe go west to L.A. The next day we got a nice place off the strip and took in the sights of Vegas. We went to a few different casinos and lost money at every one of them, but you can have a good time in Vegas now without it centering around gambling. The only gamble we won that day is when we walked down a dark, empty street around midnight to get back to our hotel. We could probably have walked on that street 100 times and been robbed 99 of them. |
