(This page is now out of date, no longer accurately describing the list)
This list is for any burners who wish to enjoy a censorship free discussion. Yes, we mean it. Say anything you want as long as you don't break any laws in the process or otherwise violate Yahoo's Terms of Service agreement, and as long as it's about Burning Man or Burning (if only indirectly). Come here and expect that yes, you're going to be offended periodically, just like in the real world.
That's life, and we're not going to hold your hand or twist your arm while you try to live it. Adults deserve better than that. (Please remember, though - this is not an adult list. If you want to get into more "adult" material, you might want to try an adult Burning Man group like our sister list or maybe even take it to the ePlaya, if you're pro-BMORG. Whatever else you might say about them, BMORG sure doesn't seem especially puritanical).
We, ourselves, do not read this list most of the time. We just keep a bare minimum of order, so if you see somebody clearly violating the rules we have just set, send us a complaint and we'll look into it. Just keep in mind that if your complaint is "he was being rude" or "I don't like his politics", we aren't going to be amused, and we're not going to be nice about it. Frivolous complaints are a form of net abuse and will be dealt with accordingly. (Complaints about SPAM are not frivolous : our thanks go to those who wrote to us about the latest incident).
On a friendlier note, we've replaced the old combined homepage for this list and the AntiPlaya over on that popup ad heavy adult server with a new page which we think you'll find more pleasant to use. Not much on it, yet, but that may change. (We also run Burning Man lists for New York and Chicago for those who'd like an alternative to the usual BMORG dominated lists, as well as the Unofficial Midwestern Burning Man Ride Board for those seeking rides or riders in the Midwestern US, or who wish to share the experiences they've had as they rode through our region going to burns).
To answer a commonly asked question, yes, a few of the moderators here are Pagan. This is not, however, a specifically Pagan list. (The owner, himself, is a Roman Catholic, albeit a highly openminded one). For that reason, in the recent past we've suggested that those who wished to discuss specifically Pagan material or network with other Pagans take it over to the Playa Pagans list. Having looked in on it since then, we were not at all pleased with what we saw. We soon found that the moderator seemed to be proclaiming fluffy bunniness as a dogma in a tone that left little doubt that serious, reasoned dissent on this would not be tolerated. That impression was not a misleading one, as she then went into hysterics over a rational critique of her ideas, and even went so far as to say that she had been done a horrible injustice by the suggestion that other people had rights which she might be reasonably expected to respect.
Sieg heil, indeed.
The Freelist, itself, is religiously neutral. However, it is also a place where otherwise silenced points of view are meant to be heard, so we offer an invitation to those Pagans (whose points of view do not fit into the absolute relativism of Playa Pagans) to post here until a less censored Burning Man Pagan forum has a chance to get going. Keep in mind, though, that not all of the members on this list are Pagan, and if somebody wishes to critique your path (or even the idea of Paganism), he is free to do so. That's part of what freelists are for, and to put that policy to one side would be to give Pagans a privileged position, something our nonpagan owner obviously can't agree to.
