| Home school became legal in all 50 States in 1993 (Heuer, 2000, September 12). People everywhere start their education, at home, with their parents or guardians. Computers have made getting basic education easier through the years. Special programs and software have been made just for home schoolers. | This is my term paper on home school with computers. First, I am going to tell you some of the reasons why people choose home school for their children. Second, I will explain the benefits of using computers for home schooling. Third, is the why and how computer programs and software, used in public schools, are different from the ones used in home school. Fourth, I will give you information on how to contact and see for yourself the resources, available on the web. Finally, my conclusion on what my research means to me. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The United States has been having difficulties with their public schools. Some of the problems are unsatisfactory test scores, bus safety, violence among students, and world wide terrorist threats. These issues have parents looking toward alternative means of education. When you let your child go to public school, you are taking a chance of them being in a bus accident, catching a virus from other students, the school being bombed, or other students shooting them (Home Schooling, 2001). Home school has grown more popular through the years due to the safety concerns of our children. The estimated number of children being home schooled range from 1.5 million to well over 2 million (Heuer, 2000, September 12). These numbers are increasing each year. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| I send my child to a public pre-school only for her social needs. The education she receives is an extra. There is not a day that goes by that I do not consider taking her out of public school and starting her on a home school program. These thoughts come from the fact that our country is at war right now. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| There are many benefits of using computers for home schooling, like: free advice, worksheets, reading lists, books online, CD-ROMs, study guides, and exams. There are two kinds of home school approaches. The home teacher can outsource the entire education through virtual school. Another way to get educated is when home teachers combine all available resources together to create curricula for their children. This process is called eclectic home school. Both types depend entirely on the internet. There are egroups, who offer home teachers free discussion portals. You will find more than 1,600 lists containing everything from study guides to religious views on home education (Heuer, 2000, September 12). Some examples are: EdGate.com and Family Education Network. The parent and the child can get interactive classes to one on one tutoring through online resources. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Programs and software for public schools are very different from the ones used by home schooling. Teachers and bureaucracies choose not to allow public schools to run these programs and software. They fear their job security will be threatened by the use of these products (Somerville,1994). The home school programs and software are advanced enough to leave out the extra help. They are cheaper, easier, and more efficient (Pride,1994). The products they use in public schools are more like educational video games. Until recently, computerized learning was limited to primitive exercises where cartoon figures congratulated children for spelling right. Now it is as brightly colored as a Nickelodeon cartoon (O'Conner, 2000, September 11). | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Many times I sat to write this term paper and I kept getting writer's block. This is very unusual for me. My best friends call me Chatty Patty. They say I never shut up. My World Wide Web searching experience has me feeling very confused about my future. This started out as just a school project and now I can feel it changing our lives. The world we live in is changing fast, for better and for worse. The subjects I chose to search were: home school with computers. I never realized what I was getting into. I have learned so much. I do not know where to start. I just wanted to say I never realized how many people are doing home school for their children and how serious it is. My neighbors home school their children and we always thought they were just paranoid about the safety of their children. After looking up all those websites on home schooling, now I am paranoid for the safety of my pre-schooler. I did not make her go to school today.
