I am projecting this trade, though I hate to do this, but it apparently is a done deal and they will announce it on Friday. This will enable the Giants to get Kerry Collins salary off the cap, within the next two seasons. I think Collins will be on this team next season, and help develop manning, remember last season first pick overall never took a snap for Cincinnati. Giants want Manning and Manning wants to go to the Giants, a match made in heaven.

Manning is the top rated player in this draft, period. Giving up a the number four pick a second round pick and either Ike Hilliard or a number 2 next season is not a bad deal. I think this works for both teams.

Alternative: Robert Gallery OT Iowa. Giants had Gallery rated as top player in the draft a week or two ago, has that changed?

It appears virtually impossible that the Raiders use this pick, they are already formalizing a plans to trade down. Right now Raiders are playing this perfectly, keeping everything quiet as teams start to panic over the player the have targeted. Cleveland wants to move up for Gallery. Cards might have to move up for Fitzgerald. Giants trade up to number one hurts the Raiders leverage with the Browns. Raiders two biggest needs are WR and QB. I think their top rated player is Roy Williams, and they will take him with Cleveland's pick at 7. They appear to be in in trouble if they think they can take Losman in the second round, right now Packers and Rams(?) are both contemplating him. Losman two biggest problems are his attitude, which the Raiders don't care about, and his ability to read defenses. He will have to be developed for 2 or 3 years before he will be NFL ready, which is just about how long Gannon has left. In fact, I think Losman's best comparison is Gannon. He is a superb athlete who is not ready to play in the NFL, just like Gannon who couldn't read defenses when he came out of Delaware in the forth round. His attitude and propensity to rub teammates the wrong way is very similar to Gannon's as well. They had a lot of scouts at Roy Williams terrific workout, so why not trade to 7 or 4 and pick up a 2nd and/or a first next year. I can easily see them getting at least 2 second rounders, the same as San Diego, from Cleveland so they can grab Gallery. So I'm going to place Gallery here. The Raiders need a left tackle and Gallery is a Offensive line changing player. Gallery has amazing feet and enough size to be a great left tackle for years to come. Raiders can just sit here and grab him then they can quietly sit back and watch the increased production from all the so-called skilled positions. Gallery is the type of player who will not only start for 12-15 years, but dominate the position for 12-15 years.

Alternative: Larry Fitzgerald WR Pittsbergh . If Raiders see Losman as a viable alternative at QB Fitzgerald would give them a faster taller Tim Brown.

I think Green is sitting pretty, either Fitzgerald falls or they take Reothlisberger, or they trade down and grab a DT, either Vilma or Tommie Harris would be huge additions to this team. In fact you could argue that, besides QB, DT is there biggest need. Green could trade down twice pick up a couple of extra 2nd and 3rd rounders and grab Hall or Robinson. Of course all this is moot, since I believe Fitzgerald will be available here because Gallery has clearly established himself as the number 2 player and the safest pick in the draft. Green will not hesitate to take Fitzgerald. While McCown had the most memorable throw of the season last year, I wonder how they can really pass on Roelisberger? Fitzgerald may have solidified his number one ranking in the draft with an amazing workout. He showed up standing over 6'3" and 221 pounds and ran a 4.47.With a vertical jump of 35 inches and the quickness to run the 3-cone-drill 6.97 seconds, he showed why he was the best WR in college last season. He also bench 225 pounds an amazing (for a WR) 20 times.

USAToday.com reports: The Cardinals hold the third pick overall in the draft and, after five wins in 2002 and four in 2003, you name it, they need it. They've seemingly settled on Josh McCown at QB and say they won't use a first-day selection at that position. They can't stop the run. Their pass rush has been worst in the league for three years. They need help at cornerback. Their offensive line, touted as the strength of the team, is showing signs of breaking down. It might be time to find a new middle linebacker, although Green lists Ron McKinnon as one of only five sure starters at this point. It will be a matter of prioritization but with a pick that high most coaches want a player who can turn a game quickly.

Alternative: Ben Rothisberger. If Raiders or Chargers take Fitzgerald, then Cards will have to take a QB, and Rothisberger is most likely to be here over Manning.

Does Schottenheimer thinks Rivers is a better QB then Manning? No. But if you add in 2 second rounders (Bolts have pick number 35, and acquire Giants pick number 34 for trading down 3 spots) then Rivers and say Taylor Jacobs with the Giants pick at number 34, then you are talking about a steal, if Rivers and Manning are rated basically equal. Rivers was a four year starter and productive each year. He has started in 5 bowl Game, including the Senior Bowl. He won all 5, and more amazingly was named MVP of each game! The Bolts interest in Philip Rivers may not be unique, he is flying up the charts, and the Sporting news.com has rated him above Rothlisberger. Rivers has all the intangibles a QB needs. Like Brady he just wins the big games. He was dominate at the Senior Bowl and showed he was not just a systems QB. He will be the 2nd QB taken. He has continued his rise at the combine where he was reported to be very impressive. Has a lot of Brady in him, likes to hit the short quick reads, and struggles a little with the long ball, and he just wins the big games when it counts.

SportingNews.com: Philip Rivers, 6-5/229, NC State. Is a ridiculously accurate passer who completed 72 percent of his attempts in '03 to lead the nation. Reads defenses well, and has a great feel for the game. Is a winner with every intangible. Is an average athlete, and lacks much mobility. Is big and strong. Throws with an awkward motion, which concerns some scouts. Has a quick release. Has pretty good arm strength. After lining up in shotgun much of college career, must adjust to taking snaps under center.

Schottenheimer needs to win now, and has to pick up at least one O-Tackle, one D-Tackle, and one WR, though he really needs multiple players at all three positions. Remember the Bolts lost McIntosh, Raymer, Parker, Page and Garmon from the their OL. There starters are below average at best, and their depth in nonexistent. Jason Ball is the lines best player. Mike Goff is the next best, and the only good news is that there is a legitimate battle at the Left Guard spot between the unknown Phil Bogle and the Injured and overweight Fonoti Toniu. So having two second rounders will allow San Diego to grab a DT and an O-Tackle at the top of the second round, and the Giants are also going to give up a Number 2 next season, or Ike Hillard. Remember, Bolts have first pick in the draft, and if Mike Williams goes in the supplemental draft he will be a Bolt. So do you take Ike Hillard or next years number tweo, if you have Williams waiting in the background.
Alternative: Trade down again for another second. Remember if Oakland trades down to Seven, they will take Roy Williams who they appear to have rated as their top prospect. The Jags want Roy as well. But if Schottenheimer trades down to 9, he risks Pittsburg hopping over him for Rivers. So I think they should just stay here and take Rivers, especially if the get Hillard. This allows them to fill there top four needs in the first four rounds, and allows them to enhance Ol, DL, and/or WR positions further in later rounds or address other positions.

It appear now that they will be deciding between the two Miami Phenomenon’s Taylor and Winslow. Safety appears to be the bigger need position, but Winslow had a more impressive workout. Skin' owner likes the big names, and Kellen Winslow is the biggest name in the draft. In the end, the Skins have said they won't pick a player who has the Poston Brothers as their agent, this eliminates Winslow. I like Kenechi here, but word is Skins don't. As we get closer to the draft D-linemen get more and more valuable. However, Skins will have a tough choice between Taylor and Winslow, who will be a great one. In the end the Skins could easily replace both Safeties, so Taylor is the choice. He has it all everything you want in a pro safety: size, speed, hands, instincts, a mean streak, ect. He could redefine the Safety position. However, he has had off the field issues and may be a detriment to any team he is on. But if he matures he could easily be the best safety in the NFL. He did make it through last season without any trouble and had 10 interceptions. So he maybe a good risk here.

OURLADS: Excellent cover safety. Does a very good job in deep zone. Reacts quickly and has good closing speed. Plays the ball extremely well – natural interceptor with a lot of career picks.

Alternative: Kellen Winslow TE Miami. This is the kind of decision that breaks hearts.

Lions really need a Running Back, but they should be able to grab one of the top four RB's in the second round. Winslow has the ability to be a great one, and I think he is tailor made for the West Coast offense. He will certainly help the underachieving Wide Receivers the Lions have been grooming. Winslow is the typical Miami All-American, an amazing talent with an amazingly selfish mouth. Could be the best ever TE, and a Terrell Owens type pain in the butt. He has let his ego get in the way on and off the field upon occasion. but the talent is amazing! Steve Mariucci is an offensive coach who knows how valuable a great TE is in the west-coast offense. Plus Winslow is an exceptionally hard worker and is putting on weight and muscle all the time. Winslow at 250 pounds has been running consistent 4.5's. They appear to be happy with which player falls past Washington- Winslow or Taylor, but signing of Marion has revealed their lack of interest in Taylor, who has a lot of baggage, so I'm sure they are hoping Winslow slides past Skins. Pro Football Weekly has Winslow rated as the Number One player in this draft, and when he was running sub-4.5s at over 250 pounds it was sure hard to argue.

Alternative: Sean Taylor S Miami. Lions will take which ever phenom drops to them.

Kellen Winslow Jr.- OURLADS: Very quick off the mark to get initial position. Moves his feet well to maintain his balance. Good cut blocker. Active. Gets off the ground quickly to go after other defenders. Effective on the move – gets linebackers well. Outstanding receiver. Smooth in his release – comes off low. Good route runner with fluid hip turn, shifty moves, sharp cutting ability, and the speed to run away from linebackers on crossing routes.

Gallery is easily the player that would help this team the most. They are desperate for a Left Tackle. The drafting of Gallery would allow the Browns to move Ross Verba to Right Guard, and actually give them a decent line, but right now Right Guard is a hole and Verba is a liability as a LT. If they can't trade up they will be choosing between Harris and Roy Williams, and it looks like Williams will win. The back to back losses of their two most productive WR's, Kevin Johnson and Dennis Northcutt (Although Northcutt is still on the roster, he said he will never play for the Browns again). Roy showed he was a top five pick with an amazing Pro-day workout. He was a four year starter, who had his best season as a Senior, and admitted that he started lifting weights after his junior season to help with his nagging leg injuries, and it clearly worked. Roy could solidify this offense. He has everything you want in a WR: size, speed, hands, and production. Is considered a legend at Texas.  Roy Williams should not be here, and they cannot pass on him if he slides down here. He has Randy Moss type triangle numbers (6'2.5; 212, 4.45), plus he is a team player and has never been accused of anything by teammates. SportingNews.com: Bottom line: After working hard in the weight room for the first time in his career in the offseason leading up to the '03 season, he avoided the hamstring injuries that bothered him in the past and looked sharper than ever. Williams is a complete wide receiver with excellent size, speed, hands and run-after-catch skills. He is the second-best receiver in the '04 class and should be selected in the top 10.

OURLADS: Runs with good control – stays low and comes out of his cuts with a burst. Has deep speed. Willing over the middle target with solid hands.

Alternative: Tommy Harris DT Oklahoma. They may have to give up a 2nd rounder and/or next years number one to trade up for Gallery. Does  Jacob Rogers OT from USC just seemed destined for Cleveland in the second round. Often teams locate players that fill their top needs in the second and third rounds which allows them to draft for another need. With the underachieving Gerald Warren and the over-achieving Orpheus Roye as there starting DT pair, Wilfolk would help. However, I think Tommie Harris would a better fit for there defense. He is the typical one-gap, get to the QB DT. Plus he can also play LDE. Don’t rule out Sean Taylor either, but with Griffith (93 tackles) and Little (6 Int), Safety is not a desperate need, and D-Linemen always become more valuable on draft day. Harris is a 290 pound super aggressive one-gap DT. He was recently timed at a 4.67 in the 40, which is remarkable. He was doubled and tripled teamed in college, which opened a lot of lanes for teammates. Super-quick and strong, he should be a good one for a long time. The question is can the Browns, who appear to have one starting quality Linemen on their roster draft anything on the first day other then an O-Linemen? They will have to trade down and grab Andrews.

A lot of interest in Hall here. Falcons really need a Corner and Halls return ability has been drawing comparisons to Deon. Hall is not in Sanders league as a cover corner, but he might be as a returner. Hall has been amazing in workouts and is flying up the charts like Marcus Trufant last season. Hall has amazing speed, and is probably the fastest player in the whole draft. Has a reputation as not being the smartest DB, but he should minimally come in as a rookie and be a dynamic return man! Is skinny and not the most physical corner, but with the new touchy-feely pass interference rules, a corner who can turn and run faster then the WR becomes invaluable, that Corner is Hall.

DeAngelo Hall- OURLADS: A slender framed yet solidly-built corner with outstanding speed and athletic ability. Big play performer throughout his career. Saw some action at wide receiver. Plays with a lot of confidence. Very quick footed with a smooth backpedal. Can turn and run easily with receivers. Comes out of his pedal sharply. Good leaper – reacts well to the thrown ball. A little raw – will bite on double moves at times but shows good recovery skills – can get caught peeking at the quarterback and losing track of the receiver.

Alternative: Vince Wilfork DT Miami

SportingNews.com USC wide receiver Mike Williams did what he needed to do at Thursday' pro day workout in Tampa. Running the 40-yard dash both into and with the wind, Williams was timed in the 4.56 to 4.60 range. Those times are good enough for a 6-4, 228-pound wideout with outstanding skills. His vertical jump was 37 inches, his broad jump was 10-1 and his three-cone drill was 6.84 seconds -- all impressive numbers at his size. His short shuttle was OK at 4.3 seconds.

Jay Goldberg of 90FootballLinks.NET- WR: Price and Finneran are an okay combo.  Price has the skills to be a lead receiver, but will certainly not be confused with Moss-Holt-Owens-Harrison.  The Falcons are also relatively weak on the bench behind these two, although I am intrigued by Edwards.  The Falcons need two receivers.  Ideally, one to challenge for a starting spot, and one to play in multiple receiver sets.

If Roy Williams doesn't drop to Jags, I think the will look at D-End. Smith would make a huge difference on this team. But Smith has amazing speed for a DE and enough size to not be a detriment against the run. I think Smith will be a terrific pass-rusher for years to come. He could be averaging double figures in sacks in a year or two, plus he ran an amazing 4.58 at 275 pounds at his individual workout. Smith has added size and muscle to his great quickness, power and speed. He is a senior whose maturity and experience will show next season as he starts as a rookie.

Will Smith- OURLADS: Strong and quick with his hands into blockers. Powerful into gaps. Holds his ground well and usually stays on his feet. Does a good job of stringing out the wide play. Disciplined. Locates quickly and hustles in pursuit. Disruptive pass rusher – more powerful than speedy. Good ballrusher for an end. Athletic – used effectively from a standup position which required him to drop off and cover.

Jags hoping Roy Williams drops to them. If Roy drops they will not hesitate to take them, They should be on the phone with San Diego 2 seconds after they announce the trade with the Giants. But to reach for another WR would be a mistake. They can grab Woods, Jenkins, or Henderson in the second and have their choose of D-Ends here. Smith has been shooting up the charts with great workouts, and Kenechi has a shoulder problem that has been red flagged by some teams.

2. Will Smith, 6-2/267, Ohio State. Is a complete player. Penetrates the line, and has a nice combination of strength and pass-rush skills. Wins the battles he should. Comes off blocks well. Is a solid run defender with functional strength. Is fast (4.58-second 40-yard dash). Is athletic and flexible. Plays low. Lacks ideal height.

Alternative: Roy Williams WR Texas. If Chargers trade down to four, Jags may be able tempt them with a 2nd to move up to 4 for Roy. He is the player the Jags really want. They have to address the WR position, but with the amazing Depth at WR they will start to drop. There will be some starting quality WR available in the second round, so the Jags turn to defense. Though there DL is solid, they cut Tony Brackens and Hugh Douglas has been an over-aged bust.

Wilfork appears to be best run-stuffer in the draft, and could go anywhere from 5-20. It seems to me Texans would be crazy to pass on Wilfolk. There D-line needs help, and Wilfolk seems made to be a NT. Signing of Robaire Smith and Gary Walker may allow Texans to take Hall, but Wilfolk is the best NT prospect in the draft. He showed up at his workout at 323 pounds and showed amazing speed and quickness for a man his size. He plays low is is immovable against the run. The Texans want to play a 3-4, and Wilfolk is the prototype NT. He is a Ted Washington type player. If Sean Taylor is not available Texans have to take Wilfolk He is a monster, and when he is in shape and motivated he is all put unblockable. There is no reason he should not be a top ten pick.

OURLADS: Thick legged with a wide upper body and excellent strength. Explosive off the ball. Has a quick first step and is powerful into blocks. Does a good job of controlling his man, fighting the double team, and clogging the middle. Holds the point well. Solid inside pass rusher with a fine combination of strength and aggressive moves.

Alternative: Sean Taylor S. Early rumors had the Texans infatuated with Taylor, the all-world talent physically. But it looks like teams are happy with his maturity and the Texans will have to trade up to grab him.
USAToday.com reports: The Texans will devout most of their attention to defense in this year's draft. That should come as no surprise considering the team finished 31st in total defense, 31st against the pass and 29th against the run. Houston, meanwhile, stockpiled on offense during their first two drafts, using their first-round selections to select quarterback David Carr in 2002 and wide receiver Andre Johnson in 2003.  The early concentration will be on the defensive line. The Texans would like to have Oklahoma defensive tackle Tommie Harris, but he'll likely be gone by the time they pick. Maryland's Randy Starks, Texas' Marcus Tubbs and Miami's Vince Wilfork all could be possibilities for the Texans, who are in need of a run-stopping, two-gap defensive lineman, particularly one who could provide an inside pass rush.  Houston also needs to upgrade at free safety. Miami junior Sean Taylor is the best safety in the draft, and many scouts have compared him to Dallas' Roy Williams.

Word is Pitt wants a Corner, but if they pass on Rivers they will regret it for years to come. Some have Roethlisberger sliding down to Steelers, and he would be a good fit here as well. Passing on a QB here is the kind of decision that will get Crowder fired. Roethlisberger got lost in the shuffle a bit between Manning and Rivers. But he is a legitimate prospect, and only lacks the experience of the other two. Steelers need a QB of the future.

Alternative: DeAngelo Hall CB Virginia Tech. has been killing in recent workouts and may just be to good to pass up.

East Coast Sports News- QB Philip Rivers (No Carolina St)...The Steelers were leaning towards taking one of the Drafts top halfbacks with this pick but since they were able to sign FA HB Duce Staley they are now able to finally fill their need  at the QB position...Note- some Draftniks may feel this is too high for Rivers to go...but Coach Cowhrer knows that Rivers wont be there when the Steelers pick next and He's too high on Rivers to pass on him and regret it later.

Jets still looking to replace Coleman and Glenn at CB, but Roy Williams is the real deal, and Wilfolk is the kind of NT/DT that change a defense, like Ted Washington. However, I hate to give the Jets such a good player at a need position, but this is the deepest first round I have ever seen. Dunta Robertson has played Safety and Corner in college. He only started at Corner his Senior year, and dominated. He needs some refinement, but he has been phenomenal in recent workouts. He will be the 2nd corner drafted, and has moved up to number one on some lists. He had the toughest to play Safety in College, and the great foot quickness to play corner in Pro's. Ran a 4.37 and is flying up the charts. 

Dunta Robertson- OURLADS: A very athletic corner with outstanding speed. A little shorter than ideal for a top prospect. Thin with short arms. Has the frame to carry more weight. Physical in press coverage – does a good job of jamming receivers. Very smooth in his pedal with loose hips to turn and run. Agile and quick footed. Has great change-of-direction. Explosive in his plant and drive. Rarely beaten deep.

Alternative: Jonathon Vilma LB Miami, and. Wilfolk will continue rising as we get closer to the draft.

Linebacker. Cap pressure pushed out starters Mo Lewis and Marvin Jones. Further complicating matters, new coordinator Donnie Henderson is expected to mix in the 3-4 alignment and use John Abraham at outside linebacker at times. Though Abraham has some experience at linebacker, he might be unable to make the transition. Victor Hobson is projected to move inside and replace Jones. Hobson is better suited to play inside, but he is somewhat of a liability in coverage. A lack of depth inside also will make the 3-4 difficult to run. One positive is Hobson's versatility, which lets the Jets draft the best available player. The team could select the top inside linebacker in the draft, Jonathan Vilma of Miami (Fla.), with its first pick. It also could stick with Abraham, Hobson and Sam Cowart, then use a couple of middle-round picks on Notre Dame's Courtney Watson and Nebraska's Demorrio Williams for depth.

 Bills would like a WR, QB, or DE here. Wide Receivers depth appears to have starters all the way down to the 3rd round.  If Rivers or Roethlisberger falls here, I think they will jump all over him. I'm a Bledsoe guy, but the player who faced the Patriots late last season was not the Bledsoe who played for the Pats for all those years. He looked completely lost and without a shred of confidence. It was sad. He has to be replaced. But if Rivers and Roethlisberger are gone, there is no way they can pass on Kenechi, who I think will fall to them because of shoulder concerns. I just can't get over Kenechi production size ratio. He will be a DE in the Pro's, but he has played DT at USC, and he can hold up against the run. Did I mention he had 16.5 sacks last season at 285 pounds. He could easy be the second or third pick in the draft.

Kenechi Udeze- OURLADS: Often a little late off the ball but he's quick in his movements. Quick with his hands taking on blocks. Plays with good knee bend and balance. Rarely off his feet - bounces up quickly when knocked down. Generally good at the point of attack. Plays the edge run well.

1. Kenechi Udeze, 6-2/273, Southern Cal. Is an opportunistic player with a feel for the game. Finds the ball. Is a junior, but started for three years. Changes direction nicely. Shows good burst to quarterback. Shows good balance, and stays on his feet. Plays the run well. Has a thick lower body. Lacks ideal height. Has long arms, and uses hands well to shed blockers. Plays hard. Disappears in some games.

Alternative: Randy Starks. No O-Lineman worth taking here, but there appear to be plenty of interior linemen available in the second round. So DT or WR makes the most sense here.

A lot of people have been comparing Wilfolk to Sapp, but I think Harris is more comparable to Sapp. He is a one-gap charger who disrupts offense with his quickness through a gap. He is not the strongest hold up against the double team, and is no NT, but he is a disrupter none the less. Bears still looking to replace Washington, who they gave away to the Pats for a 4th rounder, and I can't see the Bears passing on him. Bear want to go to a quicker more aggressive one-gap attack style defense. They have enough asked Urlacher to loss some weight so he will be quicker. This is the perfect system for Harris. he does have the bulk to hold up in a two-gap, but he can be very disruptive in a one-gap attacking defense.

Tommy Harris- OURLADS: A little undersized. Has somewhat short arms. Strong and athletic. Quick off the ball. Active and aggressive with his hands to defeat blocks. Good lateral player who avoids low blocks well and works down the line with effort. Is disruptive inside. Splits gaps – is active in the backfield. More quick than fast, but he’s a competitor who hustles in pursuit.

Defensive tackle. The team wants to continue its transition from a line that occupied blockers to one that makes plays. That means interior run stuffer Keith Traylor won't return. Bryan Robinson is an adequate starter who is relentless, but he lacks ideal explosiveness. Alfonso Boone is a two-gap player. If the Bears don't draft an elite tackle, such as Maryland's Randy Starks, in the first round, Michigan State's Matthias Askew, Oregon's Igor Olshansky and Mississippi State's Tommy Kelly should be available in the third round and could push for playing time immediately.

Alternative: Reggie Williams WR Washington.

Wide receiver. Shea wants receivers who can get open quickly and produce after the catch. Dez White, an unrestricted free agent, doesn't fit well into that scheme and isn't expected back. Marty Booker and David Terrell are more explosive, but Booker drops catchable passes and Terrell is inconsistent. Marshall's Darius Watts, Mississippi State's Justin Jenkins and Oregon's Samie Parker are capable of pushing for playing time and could slip to the middle rounds.

Additions of Steussie and Galloway allow Tampa to go with top athlete available. I believe Starks will be flying up the charts as we get closer and closer to draft time. He played DT and DE in college at 6-4 305, and he is only growing. He can be a force against the run, and still has enough speed to get to the QB. He could start at DE his rookie year, or be the primary back-up at 3 positions on the defensive line. In fact, he may be best compared to Kevin Williams. Big and strong enough to play DT, and Quick and fast enough to play DE. And in Tampa's one-gap system, he could fit nicely into Sapps rush position, or start at RDE and allow Spires to come off the bench as a pass rusher rather then a starter..

Some think Reggie is a better prospect than Roy, and they may be right. Both are big, fast and productive. While Roy is faster, Reggie appears to be a little smoother coming in and out of cuts, which is paramount in the NFL. Williams is clearly the top player available at a need position, period. WR is their top need, but if you look at their history 49ers have a lot of luck with later round WRs. There will be plenty of quality WRs in the 2nd and 3rd rounds, so don't be surprised is Niner's take a corner here. Another team that would be better suited to trade down and gain extra picks to replace all the Free Agent losses devastating this team. As of right now San Fran looks like the worst team in the NFL. Patriots should be on the phones with this organization starting today. Does a third round pick allow the Pats to jump up here from 21? Then 49ers could take a WR or QB at 21 and pick up an extra OL in the third.

Reggie Williams- OURLADS: Can shorten his steps and turn his hips quickly to gain separation. Creates mismatches because of his size. Shows the ability to make the difficult body control catches with defenders on him, but he’s a little inconsistent in terms of hands. Will cradle and double-clutch some balls.

Alternative: Dunta Robertson CB South Carolina. Robertson has solidified himself as number 2 corner in the darft with great workouts.

Alternative: Mark Clayton. Another replacement for another whining reciever.

Broncos make bold move hop-up over Pats and Cowboys. Is Jackson their target? Shanahan said they wanted a DE, but I don't see Kenechi Udeze or Will Smith falling here. DL will be a big issue here for Denver. Jackson would be a huge addition to this team.

Alternative: D.J Williams OLB Miami. I've had DJ Williams going to Denver, and he just seems to fit for this team.Williams is another superb athlete from Miami and at 6-2 245 pounds has enough size to be a great one. Has not put it all together yet.

OURLADS: Athletic. Patient runner. Reads and follow blocks well. Short strider with juking moves in traffic and the ability to cut back. Gets outside well – has loose hips to turn the corner. Changes speeds well. Get to high gear quickly through a hole. Keeps his feet active. Looks to spring on his finish. Has power but he runs a little tall at times, losing some power – not a consistent tackle breaker. Inconsistent but promising blocker.

Steven Jackson War Room analysis:
Inside running: A big, powerful back. Is a downhill slasher. Runs with solid pad level. Delivers a blow at the point of attack and consistently finishes runs by falling forward. Can wear down opponents and seems to get stronger with more carries late in the game. Shows adequate vision. Won’t make a lot of sharp cuts and lacks great burst through the hole. Does a solid job of finding cutback lanes and has good speed to the outside.

With the 34 year old Ashley Ambrose the only every down corner on the roster, after the cutting of  Dale Carter,

the Saints need a corner the way the Pats need a running back. Is this the final destination for Ty Law? With both Hall and Robinson gone there are no Corners worth taking here. Williams is a super athletic LB who hits like a truck. 

Coverage skills: Lacks experience at cornerback. Lacks ideal height and leaping ability, but has terrific natural skills and could become a "shutdown corner." Has great quickness and speed. Is confident, durable, tough and aggressive. Can make sudden cuts, and mirrors wide receivers' double moves. Changes directions quickly and smoothly, even out of backpedal. Shows the fluid hip movements and speed to turn and run with receivers. Shows good acceleration and recovery speed. Reacts nicely to passes in the air. Has good closing burst and ball skills. Flashes big-time playmaking skills. Grade: 8.4.

Alternative: Ben Troupe TE. I have him falling later then he should, for no real reason. He should be a first round pick, and this would be a nice fit for him.

Odom is a pass-rusher, who has to many flaws to take at 19. Pass rushers always rocket up the charts on draft day. He has a reputation as being lazy, but has worked hard enough in the off season to dispel a lot of those feelings, and appears to have worked himself into the first round. This is a little early so the Vikes should be able to trade down and pick up a 2nd or 3rd and still get Odom. Wisconsin WR Lee Evans is tempting, but he had two knee surgeries and a Possession of Pot charge, I think he will sink to the second round. Clayton has the ability to be a good one, and with Moss as the number one receiver, Clayton will be impossible to cover.

Alternative: Reggie Williams WR. With the signing of Winfield Corner not as desperate a need. Williams would be a spectacular complement to Moss, and maybe his eventual replacement, as they are sick of the Randy show.

YIKES, who needs on Offensive line to succeed in the NFL;-) Dolphins in DESPERATE need for OL. Latest rumors have Andrews down to 340 pounds, which should be his playing weight. But he has put the fear of faking a work ethic in order to get drafted high in lots of GMs hearts. Then after he signs a big money deal his desire, diet, and dedication go out the window. If he starts to fall Miami may try to trade up, but lack of 2nd and 3rd round pick will hurt their chances to trade up. But the signing of four O-Linemen by Tampa may cause Andrews to drop. He is a Right Guard not a Tackle, his lack of ability to slide laterally in pass protection is legendary. He is a one-dimensional blocker at this point. Granted, he is an astounding road-grader, but he would get a QB killed at Right tackle. He is the type of player who can run block his team to the play-offs or eat his way out of the league.

Shawn Andrews- OURLADS: Not real active – will stand around idly after beating his man rather than look to go after him again or look for another defender to attack.  On the ground too much – not quick to get up.

Alternative: Vernon Carey OG/OT Miami O-line will be Miami's priority. Carey has local ties and is a great run blocker. OURLADS: Wide and well-built with thick thighs, large calves, and long arms. Powerful run blocker. Not especially quick with his initial movement, but he’s strong on contact. Drives with his legs to generate movement. Sustains well. Flashes a mean streak.

What a difference a day makes! I finally felt I uncovered the Pats pick, so what do they do, they trade for Corey Dillon. Belichick is the master strategist. I have no doubt that he waited until after the pre-draft press conference to make this trade. He knew everybody was projecting the Pats to take a Running Back, and he doesn’t like to reveal anything about the players he is interested in. He new reporters would ask questions about RBs, and they would provide the nature camouflage for his intentions on Draft Day. Sunday night, the Patriots top need is RB. Monday night DB is the forth most important need, so they sign Jeff Burris. Until Ty Law is officially off this team Defensive Back is not a priority. These moves elevate ILB, OL, and NT as there top three needs, though Full Back becomes number two, we all know they are not going to draft a FB on day one. With two Firsts and one Second, will they address these three needs, or has a Wide Receiver caught their eye, with the emergence of Branch, Givens and Johnson I think they will be alright at WR, and might look toward LB. Belichick has never drafted a Miami player, but Vilma is the exception. In the end, Vilma could be a star in New England, He is ultra fast and instinctive. He always seems to know where the ball is. He is horribly undersized, which may cause him to drop down this far. If he had D.J. Williams size he would be a top ten prospect. He is one of those players where you have to throw out the combine numbers and watch him play. Watch how he is always around the ball. He will gain weight naturally with age, as he is already doing. He is very smart and an excellent student. He understands what it takes to be an inside Linebacker in the NFL and is working relentlessly to prove it. He makes tackles all over the field because of his speed intelligence and instincts. He is a leader and has all the qualities Belichick looks for in a player. Plus he can cover Backs coming out of the backfield. While Inside Linebacker is not a desperate need, like running back, Ted Johnson, Roman Phifer, Ted Bruschi are all over 30. Johnson can't stay healthy, and Phifer is clearly slowing down and better suited Outside. Vilma might not start as a rookie, but he would soon become invaluable to this team.

Marcus Tubbs is a huge two-gap D-Lineman who doesn't play consistently. He is an exceptional run-stuffer and appears to have the quickness to rush the passer. At 6-4 321 pounds he ran a 5.0 forty, so he will not fly past O-Lineman with his quickness, but has the strength to disrupt the pocket consistently, which is why I have him rated over the other DTs.  If Belichick sees Traylor as a limited short term fix, Tubbs will be gone at 21. He was a fifth year senior, and started for three seasons (3 starts as a red-shirt Freshman). Motivation and consistency issues are the only negative for Tubbs. If can learn to play at 100% all the time he will be a monster Nose Tackle, and will be considered the steal of the draft. Typical Boom or Bust player. Pats have enough depth and picks to take a chance on greatness.

During his time here in New England a few trends have developed, here is a quick synopsis.

1. He has never drafted an underclassman.

2. He has never drafted a University of Miami player.

3. He has never drafted an Offensive Guard.

4. He has never drafted a player he named in his pre-draft press conference.

He likes to draft:

1. Tough players who beat up their opponents physically.

2. Smart players who understand coaching and strategy.

3. Versatile players who help at multiple positions.

4. Team players- commitment, loyalty, sacrifice to win. Also helps to explain not taking underclassman.

5. Players who love football- who value football above almost all else.

6. Extremely hard workers- players whose work ethic is important to them: off season work outs, film study, weight room, what does he do on the bench when not playing.

7. Production- what players do and don’t do in college counts.

8. Guts and determination. Will not quit in the clutch.

Great so were does that leave us? It leaves us with three players at 21 who fit all the criteria that Belichick looks for in a player, BUT they are all Miami players. Will Belichick buck his own trends, this may just be the year. Marcus Marcus Tubbs NT Texas- Phenomenal Physical specimen who is similar to Keith Traylor. Traylor is at his best for 15-20 snaps per game. When he has to play more he wears down, and he isn't getting any younger. Tubbs has issues, but at 6-4 340 pounds, when he is giving it his all he is impressive to watch. Just doesn't seem to do it consistently. Boom or bust player, he'll make your draft or break your heart. As a Senior he had: 77 tackles, 5.5 sacks, 12 Tackle For Losses, 26 pressures, 2 pass deflections, and 3 forced fumbles; All career highs. so while he has a reputation of not giving his all, he has improved in all his stats over the past four years. I really like Dontarrious Thomas, the Inside Linebacker from Auburn. He has been productive for the past four seasons. As a red-shirt Freshman he had 62 tackles. As a Sophomore he had 122 tackles doubling the output of the second leading tackler on the team. He had 92 tackles as a Junior, where he received a lot of attention from Offenses. As he was preparing for his final campaign, his Senior season where his draft position would be established, his coach asked him to move inside, and he did. He struggled with the new position early, but finished with 75 tackles, 8.5 for losses, and an interception. He sacrificed some of his draft position for the his team. Plus he won his teams off season weight room award, twice. He is the best example of a Belichick-type player in this draft. Why do I mention him here, because I think he will be available when the Pats pick in the second round. So will they take Vilma here when they can grab Tubbs here and Thomas at the end of the second round? I have convinced myself they won't.

Vernon Carey OL- I have said repeatedly that the Pats are not as desperate for an O-Linemen as most people seem to believe. Plus, Belichick will not draft O-Guard, because he knows he can develop cast-offs at that position, because he has done it over and over, over the years. He will not draft a Center, he found one in the Fifth round in last years draft. However, Andruzzi has knee concerns, and though I felt it was imperative to stick up for my boy Hochstein, he has started more games in the play-offs then in the regular season. If you add in the early struggles of Tom Ashworth, you could add him to the question list as well. Belichick will draft an O-Tackle early. Why Carey? Because of his versatility he can play 4 O-Line positions, including Hochstein’s, Andruzzi’s, and Ashworth’s position. He could easily come in and back up all three positions, if not steal a starting spot from one of the three. He is a huge strong man with quick enough feet to be a back-up Left-Tackle, although I don’t think he can start at that position for a long period. His main asset is run blocking, and with the signing of Corey Dillon, a power run-block cannot be undervalued. In 2002 he was Miami’s starting Right Tackle, and allowed only two sacks all season. He was named Offensive MVP of Five games, amazing for an O-lineman. He also had 42 pancake blocks that season. As for toughness, he severely injured his ankle in the preseason and played all season on it despite the fact that it was never truly healed. Reasons they will take him: Versatility and Smarts- has started at 4 line positions while at Miami, and has potential to be a dominate player at three (RG, LG, RT); Toughness- played injured his whole senior season and played well; Dominate run-blocker; Best position is Right Tackle. Concerns: weight has to be a concern; Tends to lunge forward some times and get himself off balance; Ankle refused to heal all last season, which is why he played so much better as Junior.

D.J. Williams OLB- Is an amazing physical talent at 6-1 250 looks skinny and runs a 4.55 forty. He is a tenacious tackler who knocks people backwards on to their butts. The Pats are getting old at Inside Linebacker, and really need an infusion of youth and speed. Williams played outside in college, but most scouts agree he can be moved inside. In the 3-4 he would have to take on Guards consistently. He is not the most instinctive LB in the draft, but his potential is almost limitless. Amazing speed and quickness allows him to make tackles all over the field.

Alternative: Jonathon Vilma ILB- I had Vilma going here earlier, in my first April Mock Draft, but unfortunately changed it to Kevin Jones on Sunday, the day before they traded for Dillon. I think Vilma would be a super fit here. He is a unique Miami player. Understands football and is constantly working to improve. Has put on 10 pounds of muscle and is up to 233 pounds, showing his understanding of his biggest perceived weakness, lack of size. Super productive player on the best team in college football over the past 4 seasons. Was a unanimous first team All-Big East as a Junior when he recorded 133 tackles. Was a unanimous first team All-Big East again as a senior when he produced 127 tackles, 12 of which were for losses. He also had three pass defenses, three fumble recoveries, a forced fumble and a sack. There are reports that teams are worried about a shoulder injury from last season. If the Pats are happy with his shoulder he could easily be there man. Has the great instincts that separate football players from athletes. Similar to Zack Thomas, in that he is undersized, but his exceptional instincts allow he to know where the play is going before anybody else on the defense does.

Alternative: Michael Clayton WR LSU-.If they some how don't trade up, then Clayton could be there man. I've heard several of the Patriots scouts are high on Clayton. And while WR is not a top need, Troy Brown is undersized and entering his 12th season, and the Offense has a tendency to bog down when he is not playing. Branch and Givens have been phenomenal additions. Bethel Johnson is still more of a returner, and Patton's knee is a question mark. Clayton was LSU's Troy brown, when they needed a big play he was their man. He had 29 receptions on 3rd down for a first down or a TD. He is the clutch receiver every team needs to succeed. He has terrific hands and is a great down field blocker. He is THE best blocking WR in this draft. He would be in the three WR mix with Branch and Brown.

 Kevin Jones Virginia Tech- 6' 227 pounds with 4.55 speed. He displayed amazing on field speed, and then ran significantly slower then anybody could believe, so he dropped a little. Many scouts had him rated as the number one back in the draft before he ran. He has put on almost 20 pounds of muscle on in the past two off seasons, and this has effected his speed. He re-ran his forty and did better, a 4.55. He is a workout warrior with production, and when evaluating players there are five things that Belichick values more then other coaches: love of football, intelligence, toughness, character, and work ethic. Jones has all these intangibles, and Jones won his teams off season work out award- The Iron Hokie this past off season. So does he have lower-body strength, squats 360 pounds. So does he have upper-body strength, benches 360. Does he have production, he was named first team all-American because he ran for 1,419 and 18 TDs this past season, and had eight 100-yard plus game, a team record. He also averaged 5.9 yards per carry. So how is he against top competition? In 2002 against the great Miami defense he ran for 160 yards. This past season against Miami defense looking for revenge, he ran for 124 yards. On the field he shows remarkable speed, excellent quickness, great change of direction/cut-back ability, and that unique make-you miss shiftiness that makes fans go, wow. Well does he have any weakness? Yes. He doesn't display the consistent tackle breaking power for a player with such impressive weight room strength. He also has some fumbling issues. But most agree he carries the ball too loosely, and that is a correctable flaw. 

Kevin Jones- OURLADS: A nifty footed tailback who gets to the line quickly and runs with good lean and balance. Drops his pads and runs with power. Can break tackles. Elusive. Can make his first tackler miss in the hole. Keeps his shoulders squared and has the ability to make sudden lateral cuts. Runs with good vision – finds cutback lanes. Waves the ball a bit as he runs – has had some fumble issues.

Alternative: Marquise Hill DE/DT LSU. This pick breaks Belichicks heart. Big, strong, fast, played 2-gap in Patriots type defense under Sable. His stats are undervalued because of system. I think he could turn out to be one of the top players from this draft. In fact, if Pats can't get Jackson or Jones I would not be surprised to see them take Hill and hope Chris Perry falls to them. Hill is the most underrated player in the draft. Parcells has to be thinking about hopping over the Pats for Jackson or Jones. They may need a RB more than the Pats. Seahawks need D-Linemen, as in multiple. Their D-line is such a mess they have to go with the top DL available. The question is do they reach for a DT here. There is not a lot of DT with a first round rating, but there could be as many as ten in the second round. Donnell Washington is a man-child, who has to mature to be a legitimate player, but he has the best size-speed ratio of any DT in the draft. Vilma can come and start for this team.

Alternative: Marcus Tubbs DT Texas. But the depth at DT seems to be in the 2nd round where they should still be able to grab Dwan Edwards, Isaac Sopoaga, Igor Olshansky, or Chad Lavalais. Plus the signing of Wistrom and Woodard allows 'Hawks to wait until second round.

USAToday.com reports: Seattle holds the 23rd pick of the first round. Upgrading the defense remains a priority, but the Seahawks have generally placed value above need. They used previous first-round picks on RB Shaun Alexander and OG Steve Hutchinson despite having no glaring holes at either position. The Seahawks could stand to find young starting talent at DE and SS. They need depth at CB, LB and DT

I'm have been predicting the Bengal's take the top rated corner they can find, So gambling on Gamble may not be the worst idea. WR or OL would be a good choice, with Carson Palmer starting for the first time, Bengal look for young versatile Linemen to help him out.

I would think a QB would be worth a look here, but they are reportedly looking for a Corner. Losman seems to be rising again. He has a cannon of an arm and the super confidence of Favre. But Gamble is a great value here. I don't think Losman makes it past the Raiders in the second round, so this pick will be a risk. Gamble in an amazing athlete who seemed to find his natural position, CB, while at Ohio State. Plus he can help out at WR on occasion. He is still a work in progress so he should slide a little on draft day, which will make Packers fans very happy.

Chris Gamble- OURLADS: Was a little inconsistent overall, yet he showed great potential. Has excellent corner size. Quick footed in man coverage. Is smooth in his turn and run. Excellent driving on the ball in front of him. Closes strong. Has natural hands for the interception – can take the ball away from the receiver.

I  think Ben Troupe would be an interesting choice here, Rams TE's situation is not good. However CB is a more important position and they are more desperate for help there. Martz loves offensive players and has talked about taking Losman here? But Troupe would add a play maker down the middle of the field and I'm predicting will be to much of a temptation for Martz. Troupe has the size, speed and hands to be a good one. Though Martz should probable go defense here, I'm betting he won't..

Alternative: Darnell Dockett DT. Has enough size power and quickness to be a good one, but is a risk because of many off  field issues.

NFL.clannra.net reports: The annual buzz from the combine has started again and this time the rumor is that with the 26th overall pick in the draft, the St Louis Rams are looking at........J.P. Losman?  That's right the Tulane QB is reportedly high on the greatest show on turf's wish list.  This begs the question:  Why do the Rams want another QB?  They should be looking to draft a tight end or a cornerback. My guess is that if this is true, it is coming from the brain of Mike Martz.

I think help for McNair would be the top priority here, and Michael Clayton would be a great addition for them. Frank Wycheck has been in the league for 11 seasons and needs to be replaced. Darnell Docket would go much higher than this if he had his head screwed on straight. Titians have to decide which Free Agents to replace, WR or DL. D-Linemen always soar in value as we approach the draft. Dockett is a legitimate first round talent with a lot of off field issues.

Alternative: Will Poole CB USC. I have him falling later then he should, for no real reason. He should be a first round pick, and this would be a nice fit for him.

I  know they have invested a lot in young Corners the past couple of drafts, but when you lose both starting CBs you have to be concerned. And Poole would e an interesting choice here, but Dansby has the potentional for greatness. He's 6-3 and thin at 235 pounds, and was running just over 4.5. He still has a little developing to do, but in a year or two he could be the player everybody was wondering why they passed on him.

Alternative: Greg Jones RB Florida State. Just keeps showing he is over devastating knee injury, and it seems impossible he won't be in the first round. 

 Eagles Draft.com Derrick Strait CB Despite their needs at DE, WR and LB the Birds grab Strait as the best value on the board. With Lito Sheppard and Sheldon Brown seemingly the starters for 2004 the Eagles need to provide some insurance if either fall on their face (which is a very good possibility). Strait plays a physical brand of corner (see the Panthers) and has the physical agility to stay with receivers. He needs some fine tuning but the skills to start in this league are there. 

Inside The Eagles.com Karlos Dansby OLB- Good pass rusher speed as well as being active around the ball. Converted from Safety, he hits like a linebacker but has Safety speed. Good value for the Eagles at this point in the draft. Will fit nicely into Jim Johnson blitzing defense. He'll replace Emmons. Gil Brandt of NFL.com reports Starling (6-0½, 196) ran the 40 twice on grass with football shoes for an average of 4.39. He added a 33-inch vertical jump and did not do a long jump nor did he do any shuttles since he had done them at the combine. In his positional workout, he ran a lot of routes and had his quarterback, Scott Rislov, throw passes to him. Not surprisingly, this is one of the hot players right now. Private workouts have been scheduled with the Jaguars, Cardinals, Packers and Eagles, among others.

Colts really want a corner here, and Dungy has a record of reaching for speed. Carroll has been flying up the charts. he is a little short, but has tremendous speed, quickness, and coverage ability. Dungy appearently has taken a liking to him and will take him here.

Alternative: Shawntae Spencer CB PittsburgAnton Odom DE Alabama Odom is a pass-rusher, who has to many flaws to take at 19. Pass rushers always rocket up the charts on draft day. He has a reputation as being lazy, but has worked hard enough in the off season to dispel a lot of those feelings, and appears to have worked himself into the first round. This is a little early so the Vikes should be able to trade down and pick up a 2nd or 3rd and still get Odom.

Central High.net D.J. Williams OLB Indianapolis needs tons of help on defense, and they can start by taking a solid pass rushing linebacker in Williams. If Marcus Tubbs or one of the corners taken in this round are available, Indy might look in that direction, but the loss of Marcus Washington will prompt Tony Dungy to draft Williams. Plus, Dungy had a Pro Bowl caliber outside linebacker during his tenure with the Buccaneers. Just some guy whose name was Derrick Brooks.

USAToday.com reports: Indianapolis will have the 29th pick in the first round on April 24. The Colts will have seven picks to use this year, regaining a seventh-round pick in a trade last fall with the St. Louis Rams for S Rich Coady.  The Colts are expected to look to continue improving its defensive unit, specifically along the interior defensive line, in the secondary and to upgrade depth at middle linebacker and along the offensive line.

Alternative: Michael Boulware. There are some D-Linmen available including Tubbs and Darnell Dockett, but does Boulware seem to the perfect fit for a Dungy defense, or am I crazy;-) Speed, speed, speed, Dungy just loves the speed.

Chiefs run defense maybe the worst in the history of play-off teams. If they take anything other than defensive players on the first day then this draft will be a disaster. Will not advance a round in the play-offs if they don't address this disastrous need. They need an upgrade over Dexter McCleon and Eric Warfield. If Tubbs or Donnell Washington fall to them they will jump, but Isaac Sopoaga, *Igor Olshansky- The two DT who amazed scouts by benching 225 pounds over 40 times each, 42 and 41 respectively, are run-stuffers who will be steals in round two and any DT they take now won't be a significant upgrade over those two. Rashaun Woods should be a first round pick, and KC has said they want a WR? but I just can't give them anything but Defense. I really like Poole. He hits like a safety, can cover like a corner, and is smart. But attitude concerns and disasterous work out have have dropped him into the third round. Bottom line: Washington has first-round physical tools, but it wouldn’t be surprising if he fell to the second or third round because of his poor work ethic. He has good upside but is very much a “boom-or-bust” prospect, making him a risky second-round selection.

Alternative: Rashaun Woods   WR Oklahoma State

Jay Goldberg of 90FootballLinks.NET- DL: A unit in need of a major upgrade.  The Chiefs should let Hicks go in free agency and replace him with a real pass rusher.  Holliday and Hicks are both solid players, but should not be paired together, neither  is a monster rusher.  At tackle, Sims is young, inconsistent, but will get better.  Browning is better coming off the bench than starting.  A run-stuffing tackle also needs to be added.

USAToday.com reports: Kansas City will pick No. 30 in the first round and should be looking hard for help at corner or wide receiver in the early rounds. Later on, pass-rushing ends and run-stuffing linebacker will be priorities.

 Panthers need both a corner and a Free Safety. Ware may have the ability to play both. He is a huge Corner, and would still be a good sized safety. He has experience at both positions. He is intriguing prospect because of his height and ability to still cover WRs. I think most GMs would like him to play Corner, but with the new anti-touchy feely rules he may have to be a safety. the Panther lost Deon Grant, their starting FS, and Reggie Howard, there starting Corner. They sign Artell Hawkins, but he has developed into an average starter at best, and may be best suited to be a Nickle Corner. I think Ware can step into that starting FS spot easily, and if the Panthers get lucky may turn into a huge starting corner.

Alternative: Jonathon Vilma. Players slide in the draft because of Size and work out issues. I can't seem to find a comfortable place for him to go. he could go as high as 12 to the Jets, or fall into the second round.

USAToday.com reports: The Panthers draft 31st this year so there's no telling what they'll do at this point. But as for positions of need, the team would like to upgrade at wide receiver, cornerback, outside linebacker and on the offensive line, possibly looking for an eventual replacement for Todd Steussie. All of that will largely depend on what the Panthers do in the free agent market.

B.J Boyer of Football.com: Keary Colbert of USC has been very solid for the North (at Senior Bowl practices) and looks like he could be the ideal #3 receiver who could play the slot on a pass oriented team. I guess to gage a wide receiver you see how interested the Rams are and they like Colbert  The Panthers are also interested in Colbert.

When you look at the Patriots needs, and there criteria for a player, a probability starts to come into focus. A player who I think is vastly underrated, and the more I look at him the more I convince myself the Pats are interested. That player is Rashaun Woods WR from Oklahoma State. He has terrific size and speed (ran a 4.45 forty at 6-2 200 pounds), and may have the best hands in the draft, rarely drops a pass. He is such a natural receiver it’s almost uncanny. Works well in the red zone. He is a smart craft player who knows how to set up a corner, but he doesn’t always play as fast as he is timed. He is a pro-polished route runner who has quick feet into and out of his cuts, and may be the most NFL ready WR in this year’s draft. Has had amazing production in college. As a Junior in 2002 he caught 107 passes for 1,695 yards and 17 TDs. As a Senior he had 77 receptions for 1,367 yards and 15 TDs. Against SMU this past season he caught 13 passes for 232 yards and an NCAA record 7 Touch Down Passes.

If they pass on Marcus Tubbs would be there pick here, but I can’t see the Seahawks passing on him at 23. Teddy Lehman will be a very good pro for a lot of years, but appears to be more a second round value, and if Carey is the pick at 21 he could be a Patriot next season. I still think Dontarrious Thomas is the perfect Belichick player and may be the player the have targeted with their second round pick.

Alternative: Derrick Strait CB Oklahoma State. I think he will be available when they pick at 56, or close enough for them to trade up a few spots like they did for Wilson last season. So Pats take a chance and let him slide. Strait has all the physical tools, and appears to be on the rise. Belichick spent an inordinate amount of time interviewing him. With the Ty Law situation starting to swirl out of control Cornerback keeps becoming more of  a need. Strait was seen by many as the top corner coming into the draft this year, much like Wilson was last year. But slow forty times have cause him to drop. He is similar in a lot of ways to Wilson, a starter for a number of years, and productive while a starter. Oklahoma coach has said he tells all his players to watch Strait if they want to understand what it takes to be a football player. I believe Belichick has zeroed in on him, just like Wilson last year and Branch the draft before.
Alternative: Jonathon Vilma ILB Miami. If they don't take him at 21, and he slips down to this pick, then the Pats might take him. Remember rumors about serious shoulder woes may cause him to slip down here, and if he does those rumor may be true. Pats still must address the inside linebacker depth in this draft, but there are a number of possibilities in the second and third round. Dontarrious Thomas, Daryl Smith, and Ted Lehman are Linebackers who can play on the inside and have great athleticism and production.

Alternative: Isaac Sopoaga NT/DT. Isaac "Sopoaga (6-2 3/8, 314) was not going to do anything except the position drills, in which he looked great in. But a guy from Colorado State named Brian Save threw the bar up 44 times, which makes him the new "leader in the clubhouse. So Sopoaga, without preparing, laid on the bench and lifted the 225-pound bar 40 times! Following the workout, he was scheduled to be on a red-eye flight for a visit with the New England Patriots." From Gil Bryant NFL.com. Sopoaga should be around in the second round for the Pats, but maybe not. He just keeps impressing everybody with his size strength and attitude. He may be the perfect Belichick type player.

Sporting News.com Patriots TEAM NEEDS

1. Running back. The team didn't exercise the option on Antowain Smith -- making him an unrestricted free agent -- and he won't return. Kevin Faulk and Mike Cloud also are unrestricted free agents. Faulk returns, but he lacks the size of an every-down back, and Cloud has been inconsistent. The Patriots need a premier back who has bulk, burst and receiving skills. Oregon State's Steven Jackson, Virginia Tech's Kevin Jones or Michigan's Chris Perry could compete for a starting role.

2. Inside linebacker. Roman Phifer made a successful transition from the outside to the inside in '03, but he's 36 and on the downside of his career. Tedy Bruschi is coming off a great season but has struggled to stay healthy. Depth is an issue, as Ted Johnson missed eight games with a foot injury in '03 and Larry Izzo is best suited to play on special teams. If the team can't get a linebacker such as Miami's Jonathan Vilma in the first round, Georgia Tech's Daryl Smith and Auburn's Dontarrious Thomas should be around in Round 2.

3. Guard. Damien Woody won't return and Mike Compton likely will join him in departing. Woody was the offensive line's anchor and will be missed. Joe Andruzzi and Russ Hochstein lack the natural ability of upper-echelon starters, so the Patriots need a guard who can push Hochstein and improve depth. Alabama's Justin Smiley and Boston College's Chris Snee are second-round prospects capable of playing this role.

4. Offensive tackle. Matt Light had a strong season and will return on the left side, but Adrian Klemm is coming off a season-ending ankle injury, and the team likely will release him. Tom Ashworth did an admirable job filling in for Klemm but is more suited to be a backup than a starter. The Patriots need a versatile tackle who can provide depth and eventually develop into Ashworth's replacement. New England could take Southern Cal's Jacob Rogers, South Carolina's Travelle Wharton or Florida's Max Starks in the early rounds.

5. Defensive end. Bobby Hamilton is expected back, but unrestricted free agent Anthony Pleasant may not return. There is some depth -- Ty Warren and Jarvis Green get snaps on the outside -- but Warren's future is inside. LSU's Marquise Hill and Ohio State's Darrion Scott are second-round prospects who could complement Richard Seymour.

6. Wide receiver. The Patriots appear to have depth, but they run a lot of multiple-receiver sets. Deion Branch and David Givens had strong years, but Troy Brown could become a cap casualty, and David Patten is coming off a season-ending knee injury. J.J. Stokes was re-signed, but Dedric Ward is an unrestricted free agent who won't be back and Bethel Johnson is inconsistent. Marshall's Darius Watts, Oregon State's James Newson and Florida State's P.K. Sam are mid-round prospects who could push for immediate playing time.

7. Safety. They need depth because Je'Rod Cherry, Chris Akins and Antwan Harris are unrestricted free agents, and only Akins is expected to return. The team also needs to groom a replacement for strong safety Rodney Harrison, and free safety Eugene Wilson eventually could move to cornerback. Arizona State's Jason Shivers, Southern Mississippi's Etric Pruitt and Kansas State's Rashad Washington have potential.

8. Fullback. The Patriots lack a physical lead blocker. Patrick Pass is a marginal starter at best, Larry Centers could retire and Fred McCrary is coming off a season-ending leg injury. Kansas State's Travis Wilson and Arkansas' Mark Pierce are one-dimensional, but they have the strength to fill this void and should be available in the later rounds.

9. Punter. Ken Walter, an unrestricted free agent, probably won't return, and he'll be pushed if he does. Walter was kicker Adam Vinatieri's holder, so a punter who can handle that duty would be ideal. Nebraska's Kyle Larson, Ohio State's B.J. Sander and LSU's Donnie Jones should be available late.

THE OUTLOOK

The team holds seven picks in the first four rounds, and its most glaring need is running back. The Patriots don't see any franchise players, so they'll draft the best athletes through the first four rounds.

The team might not keep all of its picks, but it could draft a linebacker and a running back with its two first-round picks, a guard and an end with its two second-rounders and an offensive tackle with its third-round choice. Then, it could select a big wide receiver and a developmental safety in the fourth round. With its remaining picks, the team could get a punter and a fullback, then add depth at other positions
