| Learning is a serious process (學之條件:嚴謹) | |||||||||||||
| April 15th, 2008 Hi Richard, We all ask questions daily. Did you analyze the questions you ask? There are questions on facts. E.g. "What is your name?" "Which city are you living in?" "At what temperature does water reach its maximum density?" When asked, one requires a correct answer. If you don't know, don't try to make one up. Do your research first. Scientists and engineers find the answers by reading books and performing experiments. Incorrect answers would cause disasters. There are questions on feelings. E.g. "How are you today?" "How do you like watching Jackie Chan’s movies?" "How would you feel if you do badly in an examination?" When asked, one expects a real individual expression. There is no right or wrong answer. Tell exactly how you feel. Artists and performers build up their sensitivity of feelings by travelling and experiencing different things. Real feeling expression could touch people's heart. There are questions on opinions. E.g. "What do you want for our dinner?" "How would you improve your mathematics test result?" "How would you motivate other team members to cooperate with you?" When asked, one expects an appropriate suggestion. The same answer might not be appropriate when conditions changed. Re-evaluate ideas for every single time. Leaders and managers develop the answers by listing advantages and disadvantages of all possible alternatives. Appropriate idea could bring us towards our goal. Richard, it is important not to mix up answers for different types of questions. When you are asked a factual question, it is not the time for you to express yourself without doing the research. Furthermore, learning is a serious process. If one doesn't take it seriously, one won't be able to build a solid learning foundation and gain trust from others. (君子不重,則不威;學則不固。) With love, Patrick |
