How to acquire wisdom (學習傳省)
April 1st, 2008

Hi Richard,

How could one be wise? The Confucius said, “Those born with wisdom are the best. Those who acquire wisdom through learning are the second. Those who learn only when they are in difficulty are the third. The poorest is those who do not learn even when they are in difficulty.”

孔子曰:「生而知之者,上也;學而知之者,次也;困而學之,又其次也。困而不學,民斯為下矣!」

To acquire wisdom, learning (學) is the basis. You could obtain knowledge from books, the Internet, teachers and friends. While learning, you need to practice (習). Practice makes perfect. Practice turns knowledge to skill. Also try to share (傳) with others. You won't lose any but do earn more while sharing knowledge.

Last, but not the least, is to keep reviewing (省). We are living in a very dynamic world, where things would change daily. The knowledge and skill you learnt previously might not necessarily be applicable today. Keep reviewing and looking for improvement.

With love, Patrick
