Love, wisdom and courage (仁智勇)
March 18th, 2008

Hi Richard,

According to the Confucius, Jun Zi (君子) has three important attributes. They are Ren (仁), Zhi (智) and Yong (勇).

Ren Zhe (仁者) has love. Love is the motive (所以) for every action. Ren Zhe has nothing to hide and nothing to worry about (仁者不憂).

Zhi Zhe (智者) has wisdom. Wisdom helps to decide the way (所由) to act. Zhi Zhe can connect ideas and makes no confusion (智者不惑).

Yong Zhe (勇者) has courage. Courage keeps up the effort until destiny (所安) is reached. Yong Zhe has ability to face difficulties and bears no fear (勇者不懼).

Richard, in our daily life, could you illustrate what sort of problems could occur when people have the above attributes missing? To observe people, a complete picture should include their motive, their way and their destiny. (視其所以,觀其所由,察其所安。)

With love, Patrick
