Character determines fate (性格決定命運)
December 5th, 2007

Hi Richard,

Yesterday morning, you woke up early to help me shovel the snow in the drive way. On my road to the office, I was deeply touched by your commitment to our relation. As a return, I would resume my writing to you from what I stopped five years ago. I am trying to write you an email a week. These emails will contain words or stories that had inspired me, your father, in my journey of life.

As compared to "Dear Richard", this new collection will be as short as possible and have rooms left for you to think. As now you get older, you know that there are a lot of things that could not be classified as good or bad, right or wrong, but appropriate or inappropriate. Things appropriate to me might not necessarily be appropriate to you. That's why I encourage you to have your own independent thinking.

Richard, have you ever thought about why someone is always luckier than the others? Why does one have a good family while others don't? Why does one have a good career while others don't? Is it really just pure luck? Does it all rely on one's fate? If it is, what is fate then?

In the first few years after I left school and went to work in the society, this question was always in my mind. Not until one day, I heard this from someone talking in the radio that gave me a clue. It said, "One's character determines how one thinks. The thinking will determine how one acts. The action will determine one's fate." In Chinese,「性格決定思想,思想決定行動,行動決定命運。」

So, whenever you think you are in bad luck, will you consider enhancing your character for an improvement?

With love, Patrick
