A Few Words About Imperial/Teacup Shih Tzu

I have begun recieving emails asking for Imperial and Teacup Shih Tzu. I want to take this time to address this question. First and foremost, there are no Imperial or Teacup Shih Tzu!! The recongized standard calls for dogs no less than 9 pounds and up to 16 pounds. There's no question about it and the standard does NOT call for it. These are both made up terms to describe either an occassional runt or a dog that is inbred so much that it has lost it's health and girth.
We've all seen advertisements about these unfortunate dogs. Most of which charge twice, three times, or more for them. THERE IS NO SUCH THING! This 'gene' does not exist, and who would want to invest in a poorly bred or overly priced runt? How's it done, you ask? By breeding the smallest puppy in one litter to the smallest of another (or in some cases the same) then breeding the smallest of that litter to another smallest and so on. Problems from breeding this way can vary from your dog just not eatting anything and dying to structural bone defects leading to paralysis and/or pain. It is not a healthy practice and I don't see why anyone who actually loves their dogs would breed in this manner or even how they could. It is the love of the breed that should drive you, not greed.
