One of the amazing things about prayer is that it is a battle. It always presupposes effort. The great figures of the Old Testament, the saints and even Christ himself (remember the agony in the garden?) all teach us that prayer is a battle.
It's a battle against ourselves and a battle against the tempter who will do everything in his power to stop you from seriously praying.
It's especially hard for men because we live in a society where there are inevitably more women in church than men, where religion is associated with sentiment and emotions. But in reality, it takes a strong man to be a Christian. Jesus' challenge is not for weaklings. Look what it entails. Denying yourself, taking up your cross, and following Jesus.
Jesus prayed, and as His followers, we too should pray, and pray everyday.
Now, if you're anything like me, you know that prayer just isn't going to happen. We must arrange for it. We need to reserve a time for it, and a place for it. This is essential. D.L. Moody said: "We ought to see the face of God every morning before we see the face of man. If you have so much business to attend to that you have no time to pray, depend upon it that you have more business on hand than God ever intended."
One of the devil's deceptions is allowing us to think that we can pray anywhere anytime. The truth is we only learn to pray all the time everywhere after we have resolutely set about praying some time some where.
Now after you have decided on a place and time, adopt a format. To get the feel of praying, like in learning how to write, you need lines, guidelines, at first, and you need to practice. Later,you do away with the format and be flexible and sensitive to the Holy Spirit.
