Dream: Let's Hope So!

Ok, so I can only sit back and take this for so long. I am a fan of pop music, I admit it. But to call garbage like Dream's ubiquitous hit "He Loves U Not" music, let alone worthy of radio airplay, should be a crime punishable by death (and I'm against capital punishment). First of all, the only reason that we're being spoonfed the dross of this charmless quartet is that Puff Daddy put them together. Listen Sean, we can handle a bit of J. Lo, but this is going too far. To add insult to injury, the music they're releasing is mostly Christina Aguilera cast-offs- and that's not saying much. I guess I'll be forced to give up all my future birthday wishes to help the title of their debut album (It Was All A Dream) become a reality.

Young, Thin, and Blonde? Why Aren't You Famous?

Ok, so I like Britney Spears, with her cheesy pop, her suggestive outfits, and her little pout. I can even tolerate Christina Aguilera sometimes, and I can almost understand why she got the Grammy for Best New Artist. But why have these two successful women been followed by a seemingly endless line of annoying clones!? There's Mandy Moore, the youngest of the bunch, whose excruciating singles "Candy" and the slightly more tolerable "I Wanna Be With You" (that's not a compliment) were somehow airplay hits after she appeared on TRL. She's bad enough, but then there's the vomit-inducing Jessica Simpson. Wouldn't you know that this chirpy little diva-in-training was plucked from the oh-so-reputable Christian music scene? First she contaminated the airwaves with the hideous "I Wanna Love You Forever," which was bad enough, but now she has sampled John Mellencamp's "Jack and Diane" on her latest single. Who told her that this would be a chart-topper? Does anyone still actually *like* "Jack and Diane"?? My only hope is that the clones will not last, and that they will end up in infomercials for diet pills or juicers before 2002.

When Bad Films Happen To Good Actors

Poor Julia Stiles!! Why did she take on the role of Imogen in that horrid teen flick, Down To You ? She should have guessed after learning her character's name just how horrible and unimaginative this pile of rubbish would be. The most tragic thing about the film is that the talent of Ms. Stiles was completely wasted (one should note that crap actors like her co-star, Freddie Prinze, Jr., deserve crap films like this one). If this was the only Julia Stiles film you ever saw, you would hardly find her an impressive actress, when in actuality she is just that. Thank God that she has bucked the trend with her latest, the equally cheesy but at least moderately satisfying Save the Last Dance. A narrow escape...

Am I the only one who doesn't like Santana?

Santana walked away with just about every Grammy last year, and on top of that his album has sold like 200 million in the US (or an equally ridiculous amount- I couldn't give an exact figure). "Smooth," the number one single which featured the indomitable Rob Thomas (of Matchbox 20) on lead vocals, was one of the biggest airplay hits of 1999. Why is it that America is obsessed with Carlos Santana? I mean, he's ok, I guess, but I just cannot fathom why he is as popular as he is. I am not afraid to voice my opinion about this, though I fear that I may be in a very small minority. The day after the Grammy awards I offended a fellow classmate so much with my slanderous remarks about Santana that she has since sat on the opposite side of the room! Does anyone else agree with me!??

Madonna: What Were You Thinking?

I am definitely a Madonna fan. I own several of her albums, and I loved her Austin Powers contribution, "Beautiful Stranger." Although I was a bit perplexed when I heard that she had covered "American Pie," I thought it must be good if she had done it. Let me just say that I could not have been more wrong... I'm not a big fan of the song to begin with, but I'm even less a fan of it now. Madonna, who told you that this would be a good idea? Rumour has it that Rupert Everett put the bug in your ear; perhaps you'll learn to consider outlandish suggestions before you act on them. Not only is your remake unnecessary, it's downright tedious! At least Music was redemptive...
