| Pat Burrell was first drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 43rd round of the 1995 draft. He opted to go to college in Miami. There, he was the first freshman ever to win the NCAA batting title in 1996 with a .484 batting average. In his 1997 college season, he kept producing awesome numbers, batting .439, with 18 home runs, and 16 doubles. Pat led his team that season to a 41-15 overall record. Pat's .910 college slugging percentage is second all time. The Phillies drafted Pat Burrell 1st overall in the 1998 draft. In single A Clearwater, he struggled, but still moved up to AA Reading for the 1999 season. He batted .333, with 28 home runs, and 90 RBIs at Reading. Halfway through that season, he was promoted to AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He struggled there going just 5-33. A memorable moment in AAA for him was in the AAA playoffs. Pat stepped up to the plate and hit a sure home run ball deep to left field, problem is the ball hit a bird in the air and dropped into left field! He got a double out of it, but that is one of the most memorable plays that I have ever witnessed. A month or two into the 2000 season, Pat Burrell was finally called up to the major leagues. He started the year playing first base, but with the addition of Travis Lee has moved to left field. The 2001 season looks promising for Pat. He is a team leader and looks to produce solidly for years to come. |
