5.4.1 JOB DESCRIPTION
Sunday School Teacher
- Basic Qualifications:
- A Right Relationship With God
- Sunday School Teacher is expected to manifest a grace-filled life, and testify to his/her forgiveness before God and her/his complete surrender to His will.
- Harmony with the Denomination
- A Sunday School Teacher shall be in harmony with the polity and practices of the Church of the Nazarene.
- Faithful Support of the Church
- A Sunday School Teacher shall support the local church faithfully through regular attendance (as far as is possible) and by the giving of tithes and offerings.
- Passion for ministry
- A Sunday School Teacher should have a passion for ministry to the age group with which he/she works. She/He should demonstrate a genuine concern for the holistic well-being of those to whom He/She ministers.
- Preparedness
- A Sunday School Teacher must have the willingness and the availability to consistently and adequately prepare to fulfill his/her role in ministry. Thought should be given before accepting a ministry role to one's ability to give that role the time and attention it requires.
- Responsibilities
- A Sunday School Teacher is expected:
- To Maintain A Right Relationship With God
- To give careful attention to the means of grace which feed and strengthen our individual relationship with Christ
- To Maintain A Right Relationship With Family
- To give careful attention to the needs of his/her family and to assure that ministry does not jeopardize their relationship with each other and with God.
- To Maintain Her/His Own Holistic Well-being
- To give careful attention to maintaining his/her health: physical, emotional, and spiritual. To assure that ministry is not allowed to destroy this health.
- To Prepare
- To adequately prepare every week to teach a purposeful lesson that serves to encourage teens to develop the life patterns of the student, the supporter and the searcher by encouraging and equipping them to live out the key commitments of education, union and emulation.
- To Pray
- To pray weekly for the holistic well-being of the students on that class' responsibility list.
- To Contact Absentees
- To contact frequently, by mail, phone or personal contact, those students who have not been in Sunday School.
- To Provide Pastoral Care
- To demonstrate care and concern for students (e.g. through hospital visitation, communication of pride in students or through one's presence at milestone moments in the student's life.)
- To Plan Events
- To organize and schedule age-group specific Sunday School extra-curricular activities.
- To Participate in Special Sunday School Emphases
- To plan for and participate in Sunday School Drives in cooperation with the leadership of the Sunday School Department.
- Oversees:
- The students on the class' responsibility list and those who attend class.
- Overseen by:
- NYI Council and Sunday School Superintendent
- Church's Responsibility:
- Trinity Church and Trinity Youth Ministries is expected to provide:
- Ability to look after things of primary importance
- The church must provide encouragement and opportunity for the teacher to grow and prosper in his/her individual relationship with God and family, as well as time to look after her/his own holistic well-being.
- Curriculum
- Care should be given to ensure that the teacher has the necessary curriculum to plan purposeful lessons which facilitate development in one of the four areas of key importance or the opportunity to take part in one of the four areas of key participation.
- Resources
- The church and youth ministries should ensure that the teacher has the resources necessary to effectively teach these purposeful lessons.
- Training
- The church and youth ministries should provide opportunities for training to ensure the teacher continues to develop the ability to effectively teach.
- Facilities
- The teacher should be provided a room in which to go about this teaching.
