Click here to learn about the 16 June 2003 interview before the Board.
Dateline: 9 June 2003
The Portsmouth School Board has named me as one of three finalists for the interim appointment to the Board to fill the vacancy left with Dr. Joyner's resignation.  I am both humbled and honored.  All the applicants are excellent, qualified, well-meaning citizens; each of them would have done an excellent job, bringing diverse talents to the Board.
In my comments to the Board on 9 June, I said that I would not be a part of the Board unless

(1) the Board and leadership team has and lives by shared values,

(2) the Board and leadership team has and works toward a shared purpose, and

(3) the Board and leadership team actually values differerences and uses them as a strength.

I was dead serious.

During the 16 June interview, I plan on interviewing the Board.  I have three general questions (and these are the show me the money questions)...

1.  What are the values which are fundamental to the Board?  How do these values guide the Board's interactions?  How do the Board members hold each other accountable to live and interact by these values?

2.  What is the end-in-mind for the Board? What is the goal or destination?  What initiatives are in place to move to that end?

3.  In what ways to the members of the Board celebrate differences?  What role does diversity play on the Board and in the Portsmouth Schools?  How does the Board use differences as a team strength, ensuring that differences help bring about better decisions?

If I am not satisfied with the answers provided during the interview, I will remove my name from consideration for the interim appointment to the Board.

What are citizens asking?  What are they saying?
I am most interested in hearing from interested citizens of Portsmouth:  What do you expect from your School Board?
Message to Members of the School Board:

I believe in transparency in government.  I hope you do do...
