What is your philosophy concerning the School Board?  Why do you want to serve?
Quite frankly, I did not consider throwing my name in the ring until prodded by several neighbors.  Who needs the hassle and the divisiveness shown by members of the Board.  Is it worth the ill health and increased blood pressure?  Well, excellence for our schools and our community is worth it.  The Board must put aside their differences which divide them, and harness their differences which guide them.

I believe the School Board exists for two basic reasons:  First, the School Board sets the values and vision for the system.  Through words and actions, members of the Board set the values -- the underlying philosophy and guiding values -- for everything which happens in the schools.  Second, the Board sets performance expectations for the professional leadership of the school system.  The Board sets the "what," the goals... the Board does not set the "how."  Determining "how" is the job of the paid, professional leadership within the schools, from the individual classroom teachers & paraprofessionals to the the school administrators to the system administrators and support staff.

In order to create the best possible schools, we must not rely solely on teaching to the Standard of Learning Tests.  We must remember students are individuals and are taught individually, not in batches like cultures on a petri dish.  And, we must remember that schools and school systems are systems which, to be led and managed effectively, must be seen as systems.  I advocate the use of the
Baldrige Performance Excellence Criteria in all leadership & management initiatives.
