Chapter Nine
Is this some kind of sick joke?! He fumed. Miguel, what happened? Kay pretended to now know of whats going on. Joseph is my son! Hes mine! He snarled. Miguel, honey, what are you talking about? Kay rubbed his shoulders back and forth. Someone has sent me this letter, telling me that Joseph is not my son! How can this be? Charity and I have been faithful to each other for three years! He pounded his fist on the counter. Miguel, is it authentic? Kay wasnt trying to make her interrogation so obvious. Hell, Im about to find out once Charity comes back! He is so furious with the idea that Charity have been deceiving him. After all this timehe invested so much in their relationshipand she had to do him like this.

Miguel trusted her; he trusted her with his life; why would she go behind his back like that? Miguel, calm down. Kay said.

Calm down? Calm down? Kay, how in the hell Im gonna calm down when my sons life is at stake? He raised.

Im sorry, Miguel. I didnt mean to upset you.

Kay, I need to be alone right now. Please leave. He sighed, annoyingly.

Kay was stunned to hear Miguel say that to her. Why would he tell her to leave when she is trying to be there for him and help him get through this? Kay didnt waver around and she grabbed her clothes from last night. She put them on and descended the stairs. She found her way to the door and departed. Damn it, Miguel! You got to come around. Try to understand that Im going to support you no matter what. She said to herself as she sits behind her steering wheel.
Miguel crumbled instantly and slumped to the floor. Damn you, Charity! How could you do this to me? This little boy was my whole world! Hes my pride and joy and you had to take that away! How will I tell my family that I dont have a son?! He shouted. Where the hell are you?! He blustered. Morning, Eric. Charity kissed his cheek. Morning Charity. Eric yawned and looked at her. Charity, Ive been thinking . . .

Thinking? Thinking about what?

Ive been thinking about what weve done.

Charity is a little bewildered by his expression. Eric, no one must ever know . . . Eric blinked at her. Charity, my daughter is in the other room; she has the right to know about her brother. We made a promise to keep this secret of not telling Miguel or Kay about Joseph. Hes our son. I know Miguel is a good father. But you have to admit that he can not take my place. It kills me everyday to know that I cant be there to hold my own son and Joseph knows that I am his daddy. You saw how quiet he got when I held him. Its not odd for a three year old boy to not know his father.
Charity stayed quiet and took heed to what he was saying. I know, we have to tell Miguel before he gets too attached
to Joseph.

Dont you think its a tad too late?

Eric, dont look at me like that.

Look at you like what? Eric squinted his eyes at her.

Like that! She pointed out to his expression.

Im sorry that Im a little frustrated, Charity. But you know sooner or later the truth will come out and when it does; how will he handle it? He calmed back down.

I dont know. This is all confusing to me, Eric. I cant live like this forever. Charity is consumed with guilt. You know Im not condoning this, but Im only doing this because you asked me to. I care deeply about you, Charity. Our love has brought Joseph into this world. And Im not going to sit here and deny it. He protested.

I know. She replied quietly. Eric, theres something I have to tell you. Eric fixed his eyes on her. What is it, Charity? Is Joseph in trouble? He started to pant. Charity shook her head. I believe we should tell Miguel the truth sooner, he should come to New York.

Eric blinked at her. Are you nuts? We cant do that! Well wait until my business trip is over withand I dont need my daughter around all of this arguing. He declared.

Youre right. Well wait until your business trip is over with and then well tell him once we return back to Harmony. Occupied as ever, Simone is at her desk working hard and she told the person to come in. Miguel? How are you? Simone was surprised to see him. She stood up and gave him a tender embrace. He kissed Simone on the cheek. Hey, Im good. You? He smiled and looked at her, worriedly. Miguel, whats wrong? He looks horrible. Simone thought. Simone, I had received some news that Joseph isnt my son. Simone dropped her coffee before she was about to drink it. Oh, no. how could he have found out about this? . . . Kay, she had to be up to this; she had to . . . Miguel blinked
at her. Simone, did you hear what I just said, are you all right? He asked dryly.

Im fine, Miguel. I guess Im nervous. She cracked a wry grin.

Simone, maybe you need to sit down. Miguel offered.

No, I have to clean this up. She nervously stated. Let me help you. He beamed. She insisted for him to help her, she wasnt going to argue with him: she knew better. Thanks. She was a bit embarrassed. How did you find out that Joseph is not your son? She queried calmly. Ive received a letter this morning. I need to find out if its true. Will you help me out? pleaded Miguel. Simone dropped her bottom lip and was about to answer until her phone started ringing. Hold on, Miguel. I got to answer this. She exchanged a brief smile.

Sure. He curved his lips.

Hello?

Simone, is Miguel in there? Kay asked.

Simone couldnt say her name out loud. Yes. She answered slowly.

Is he about to ask you if its true?

Simone closed her eyes, looking horrified. Yes.

Simone, what ever you do; you got to stall him. Dont let him find out yet. Wait until Charity come back and then give him the okay. Simone hates it when Kay tries to tell her what to do. She heaved out a sigh. All right. Call me immediately, whenever you feel more pain. OK? Bye-bye. Simone played it off smoothly and hanged up. Kay noted to herself. Simone, do not rat out on me. My life depends on it.

Miguel stared at her hard. Well?

Well, what? Simone pretended she didnt hear his question from early.

Well, will you help me find out if its true? Miguel had to inform her again.

Yes, but you know we have to have Charity here with you. Simone clasped her hands. She remembered she cant reveal to him that she already has the actual results of who the father is. And if Miguel discovers that she knew all along; he wont forgive her. I understand. But I dont want to do it that way, Simone. I need to find out now. insisted Miguel. Simone knew that Miguel is relentless when it comes to deciphering a covert meaning especially when it deals with him. Cant we do this another way? Miguel hoped for Simone to give him the answer. Miguel . . . I. He stopped her before she answered. He shut the door and moved closer to her. I promise I will pay you back. You owe this to me.
Please, Simone. Im begging you. Were talking about my future here. He gestured.

She felt guilty when she kept her eyes on him and dont know what to do. Shes facing a dilemma: if she helps Miguel, shell betray Kay; if she helps Kay, shell betray Miguel. Simone, Im begging you. He squeezed her small hand firmly. I will pay you back, I promise. His eyes didnt shift from hers. She sighed. Sorry, Kay. Miguel must learn the truth. Hes my friend, too. She contemplated deeply. Miguel, youre that desperate to know if that letter withholds the truth? He nodded at her statement.

Simone, if its false; then it needs to be debunked. Please, help me. What do I have to do in order to convince you? Simone was utterly confounded and she observed the desperate look in his eyes. He looked like hell and she wasnt going to put him through it anymore. Miguel, if youre not the fatherdo you have a good idea of maybe the father of Joseph? Simone folded her arms. Yeah, I have one person in mind. He frowned.
