| Chapter Five |
| A week later, Kay decided to pay a visit to see Simone. Hi, um . . . is Dr. Russell in her office? The nurse lifted her head at Kay and answered. Why yes she is, do you want me to set up an appointment? Kay shook her head and said. Thats okay, shell know who I am once I step in. Chao. She left the disconcerted nurse blinking at her as if she came from a psychiatric ward. An occupied Simone was sitting at her desk and replied. Come in . . . After she heard the soft knock on her door. How may I help you? It depends if you can help me or not . . . Simone looked up and gave Kay a hug. Kay, what are you doing here? Im so glad to see you! She smiled. Im goodyou? Kay traded a beguiling smile with her. Couldnt be better. She retorted. Whats up? Simone wondered what is bothering Kay. Simone, remember what Reese said about how Joseph look like Eric and Madeline reminded him of a Lopez-Fitzgerald? Kay stated quickly as Simone gave her a blank look. Kay, where are you getting at? This is nonsense of what youre talking about . . . Simone shook her head in annoyance. Simone, you need to get a grip. Me? What about you? Kay observed her frantic friend and disregarded her comment. Youre no fun. Kay squinted her eyes at Simone. Try me. Simone crossed her arms without hesitation. I believe there is some truth to what Reese is saying. Simone nearly choked on her soda. Thats impossible? Kay, what are you implying? Simone asked suspiciously. Im not implying anything. I need you to do me a favor, please? pleaded Kay. Why is this so important to you? Why are you pressing so hard on deciphering about what Reese says? Kay, you know Reese always make hypothetical guesses, why even bother with this one? Simone grilled her; shaking her head endlessly, wondering what in the hell Kay have been smoking on. Call me crazy, Simone. But Im convinced that Joseph is Erics child and . . . She begin to break down in tears. Kay, youre not pulling a stunt are you? Because Im not falling for it . . . Simone stubbornly remarked. Simone, this is serious. I remember being pregnant before Eric and I got married. I believe that Madeline is Miguels baby. She whimpered. And Joseph is Erics. I get it. Kay, what do you want me to do? Why do you need my help? Simone crinkled her nose. I need to know the truth, Simone. What if I had Miguels baby and not Erics all along? What am I going to do? She frantically questioned. I dont know, Kay. Well find out when Ill be running some testsbut here is what we have to do . . . Simone whispered to Kay of how their plan will fall into place. Kay left Simones office and she have to follow her best friends strategy hoping it will not be thwarted. Kay brought Madeline with her as she knocked on Charitys door. Kay? Im so glad to see you, whats going on? Charitys bright blue eyes gazed at her happily. CharityI wanted to see how you were holding upits been a while since we last talked. She walked past Charity and sat down on the couch. Kay, your daughter is beautiful . . . you and Eric have created a beautiful girl. Charity commented gracefully. Thanks. Charity, where is Joseph? Kay looked around the room. Ill go get him. Hold on. Charity rushed upstairs to get her son. This better work. Kay fancied of how Charitys world will come crumbling down. A slow clever smile surfaced on her face. Here he is, can you watch him for a minute? I have to go make a phone call. Kay nodded as she watched Charity going upstairs. Silence. . . . I wonder why Charity went upstairs to make a phone call? Unless shes hiding something; if she is, then what could it be? Kay asked herself. Never mind Charitys problem, she had to get out the cotton swabs to get the babies saliva. Before she placed the swabs in their little mouths. She reached for the bags so it wouldnt be any mix up. She landed them on the coffee table. The first cotton swab she picked up was for Joseph. Thats a good boy . . . youre so good. Kay mocked in a baby voice. She opened the bag with Josephs name on it and slipped the swab in there. Then she did the same for Madeline. Kay made sure everything was perfect before Charity made her way downstairs. Thank you, Kay. I hope he wasnt too much trouble? Charity chuckled. No. So how are you and Miguel doing? Were doing fine. From the way Charity was sounding, Kay picked up on some tension. Is everything all right? Charity took a long time to answer and she exhaled. Kay, lately Miguel hasnt been himself. I dont mean to sound paranoid . . . She paused. Too late for that. Kay thought. But Miguel is not communicating with me like he should; we talk about everything; I mean everythingI dont understand why he would act so shady towards me. Do you think Miguel is cheating on me? Charity whispered. No! God no! Kay exclaimed. Sorry Charity, didnt mean to startle you. Miguel wouldnt do that to you: youre his wife. He loves you and he adores you; dont feel this way. Im sure its a misunderstanding. Give him time to come around, Im sure he will. Kay replied with confidence. I sure hope so. Silence entered the room again. I know so, you need to give him a little more credit. Im trying, Kay. But I dont know how long I can deal with his alienation. Charity is definitely frustrated and Kay is marveling on how much she is indulging herself with Charitys sadness. Will you be all right? Kay tilted her head. Yeah, thanks Kay. She hugged her cousin. Thanks for what? She stared at Charity blankly. Thank you for taking the time out to hear me. This means a lot to me, youre my family and I can always count on family. Charity said honestly. Definitely, you dont have to worry about your family backing out on you . . . Kay was a tad embarrassed from Charitys sincere comment and somehow she is feeling lamented by it. Deep down she knows that Miguel is fantasizing about her: not Charity. Well, if there is anything you need Charity, please call me. I have to go. It was nice talking to you. Take care. Kay said. You too, Kay. And dont be a stranger. Kay and Madeline left in a hurry as Charity closed the door. Charity took a little time for herself and she inhaled deeply before she went to the kitchen. She heard someone pounding on her back door. Who could it be? She peeped out and was shocked to see who it was. Eric? She said, opening the door. Hey Charity. We must talk, is it all right if I come in? She didnt waver and invited him in. Okay . . . what do we have to talk about? Charity blinked at him bewilderedly. Kay rushed to Simones office. Simone, I pulled it off! I got the DNA samples. Kay stated insouciantly. Calm down, Kay. We dont know the results yet. Simone abided. Okay, whats next? Do we have to get Miguel and Erics blood? Kay wanted to be careful with everything; her future depends on it. Yes, but theres a catch . . . we have to make it seem like were asking for them to get involved in a blood donation. Simone told her. How soon can we do this? Kay couldnt wait; being patience is killing her. Well have to do it tomorrow. Tomorrow? Silence. I dont have tomorrow, Simone! We have to get them to donate tonight! Kay exasperated. Kay, I know this is hard for you but really, do you have to be so anxious? Simone scrutinized her. Okay, we can wait until tomorrow. Kay reconsidered. Okay, Ill go put these samples away and Ill be right back. Simone left her office to run her errand. Patience is a virtue, Kay. As soon as those results come in; Charity wont know what hit her. Kay marveled and clasped her hands. Yes! She rejoiced as she sit in Simones chair. |
