This is an isolated example of construction for an interdeck ladder, for use all over the ship. The ladders would be located in alcoves or shafts, accessed via holes in the wall, floor, or ceiling. Hatch-covers/doors would be used as necessary. (plagarist's note: yes, this is very similar to the engineering/Jeffries tube ladders seen in Star Trek. Sue me.) Presumably, the artificial gravity would be somewhat lowered in the ladder-shaft, facilitating frequent climbers and schleppers of all varieties.
