The Last of the James Gang
Two Pinkerton agents (Angus Stoddard and William Walker) come in to the detachment and tell
Craddock they have been tracking a member of the James gang for 10 years, they believe he is in
Bordertown, and they would like the marshal to deputize them so they can make the arrest.
"s'pose so.... consider yerselves deputized."
"Consider yourself under arrest."
Clive enters the room and Stoddard explains that Jack Craddock is really John McCarty.
"This is the warrent for John McCarty, member of the James gang and killer of a Pinkerton
agent."
"Hold on Jack, let's hear what he has to say."
Walker reads the evidence.
Stoddard produces a photo of the James gang..it was taken in 1870.
One of the ombres looks alot like Jack.
"John McCarty, alias John Calhoun, alias John or Jack Craddock, born in Texas in 1841, served
in the Civil War. In 1865 he joined Quanrel's Gorilla's where he met up with the James gang,
robbed a bank in 1868 and in 1871 he murdered a Pinkerton agent, soon after he escaped to
Mexico where he married and is believed to have fathered a child, he is illiterate and often
unshaven."
(Talk about coincidental evidence)!
They argue and Walker hits Jack on the head, he falls onto his desk.
Clive tries to defend his compadre, but is told by Stoddard that's it's an American issue.
Stoddard tells Walker to " throw that man in the cell, and remove his badge!"
Later that night, someone unlocks Jack's cell as he is sleeping. Stoddard comes in to check on
his prisoner and finds Jack has escaped.
On the street Stoddard is heard yelling, "McCarty! You won't escape me!"
A shot is heard and Stoddard falls dead to the street.
Clive rushes to the general store loft where the shot came from. He finds Jack holding the
murder weapon.
"Put it down Jack!......I'm not going to ask you again."
"I found it lyin' here."
Jack surrenders the gun and Clive takes him back to jail.
In the morning Walker returns and tells Clive he will be leaving with the prisoner in half an hour.
Walker feels that the people of Bordertown
so they will have to hold the trial elsewhere.
At that moment, a rock is thrown through the detachment door window. A mob has gathered
outside. Walker tells Bennett he will have to assist him in getting the prisoner out of town.
Last of the James Gang continued...
are too sympathetic towards McCarty
Jack is VERY upset.
