The Last of the James Gang (continued)
The angry mob throw rocks, hitting corporal Bennett.
"Stop it! WE know that the marshal is innocent, we have to trust that a jury will too....."
Clive shouts."Now let this man pass."
Clive feels helpless as Walker and Craddock leave town.
Marie is seen crying as the marshal leaves. Clive follows her home and tries to talk to her.
"I will see that justice is done, I am following the law."
"You are letting Jack die by following it....get out Clive."
Clive is very upset when he returns to the detachment, picking up Jack's badge from his desk...
... he rips off his uniform.
Meanwhile: Walker is telling Craddock how he and Stoddard were partners for 20 years.
"I did all the work and HE got all the glory...he deserved to die."
"you know, there ain't a man in town woulda killed Stoddard 'cept me...an' I didn't."
"I know McCarty, I killed him."
"If all you wanted was to kill 'em, why bring me into it?"
"Because of the $4,000 on your head. You're a famous man McCarty."
"Too bad I ain't McCarty."
"Too bad your past is so much like his ... and you won't be alive to deny it."
Walker takes the gun from his holster, Jack rears his horse and knocks Walker to the ground.
They struggle for the gun,
Clive finally catches up to his compadre, who is returning to Bordertown with Walker's body.
"Tell me one thing Jack...
"Nope, the name's Jack Craddock."
Later, back in town Clive and Marie talk outside the detachment.
"Do you believe he is still alive?"
"No Marie, whoever McCarty is, he's dead now."
Sally drags Willie across the street by his ear.
She caught him smoking in the loft at the store.
Willie explains about the cigar butt:
"Me and Fergus were just lookin' around and
we found it."
Turns out it's the same kind Walker smoked.
"Well, ya got yer proof Bennett, this puts Walker in the loft."
"There certainly wasn't any love lost between Walker and Stoddard." Clive comments.
Marie smiles, "It's not easy working with a legend Clive...you should know that."
Jack hangs the picture of the James gang on the wall. Then he winks at Marie.
"Mighty fine likeness don't ya think?"
...are you John McCarty?"
"Coward." she sobs.
...and goes after his friend.
a shot is heard...and Walker is dead.
Clive shows it to Jack.
